If you want to convert twitter followers into customers, I think the way to do it is to get them engaged in your page. They are following other people, so you have to equal, if not better the activity of the other people they are following.
I have a blog and tons of articles on my blog. The content on my blog is good, authority content that I know many of my readers would be int'd in. I've got over 100,000 followers and here is what has worked for me: 1. Tweet 12 catchy headlines with tinyurl links back to my blog. 2. Tweet 12 catchy headlines with tinyurl links to news URLs that would be of interest to my readers. 3. Reply to any RT's/questions that I receive. I use a scheduler to handle these 24 tweets that I do and tweet once every hour. This give me some significant traffic back to my site and doesn't seem to annoy my followers too much because I am using a combination of tweets back to my blog along with relevant news items. If you over-tweet or have too little new, you'll find that you annoy many of your followers and you'll start to get a lot of unfollows. Hope that helps.
