What is the best Digital SLR Camera I can buy for $1000 or less?

The thread title basically says it all. Looking to purchase a DSLR and wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what is the best one to buy right now. I would like to mostly do outdoor and portrait photography and I am by all means a beginner. My budget is up to $1000.

    Thanks!

Why did you suggest the Rebel T3 and not the T3i?

Guys could you please recommend a specific model based on actual metrics, not just vague statements such as "good performance and affordable price" or that your lens hasn't scratched.

    Thanks!

I wouldn't jump straight into 1000$ price range. But the suggestion of the Cannon T3i is a good one. The Nikon D-3100 (2011 model) or the new D-3200 will get you a good feel for DSLR. If you do want to go to the upper range. Nikon D90/D300S are extremely good.

You will always here Cannon vs Nikon debate. I would say go to the store and snap a few pictures, feel the camera in your hands. Realistically for a newbie there is no difference in picture quality. Although from personal experience Nikon has less grain than Cannon, but Cannon has better Hi-Def video recording.
