First you need to give people the "illusion" that your forum is busy. Add tons of fake members and tons of content. Once you get that done try to optimize the website for the search engines. After months of hard work you might be able to get the engine started.

what you need to do is to write good qaulity content articles about your forum, if your forum is about specific topic, then focus on those topics in your forum.also upload some attractive videos on youtubealso remember the power of face book, make a page for your forum there, add as many fans as you canhopefully things will start moving

If it is on topic and not pushing other sites, it's not spam... fake yes, spam no. That's not a bad thing though and kind of necessary to get a forum started. Why would someone post in a forum that there is no activity in? It need to be active whether or not it is real or fake

It's YOUR forum. How is that spam? Nobody will join a forum unless they believe there are members on there who will respond to there posts. Would you stick around DP if nobody responded to your posts?

Unfortunately I have to agree with these guys in terms of the fake posts/content, unless that is you already have a big following. Then you can just launch the forum, make users aware of it and it should fill up quickly. If you don't wanna go the fake user/posts route then you can just make quality posts on there under your username and promote the forum everywhere you can(related areas is obviously most effective). You need to give users a real reason to join it though, back in the early 90's people would join forums and communities to be "the first ones" there, was more a community feel. These days there's so much competition that most won't register without a good reason.

Spot on! Market on social sites like Facebook and Twitter can give u a lot of exposure for new site. I speak from my experience. My 1 month old site, just use Twitter marketing for now, has over 1000+++ members registering and has a lot of sales too! But for forum, its easier to get more visitors and forum posters because its free ;)

I would recommend 3 things. 1) Link building, won't explain this, look it up. 2) Facebook Ads, simple cheap, easy to work, cheaper than adwords, easy to customize age group which can bring members. 3) Hire paid content posters, dp content creation forum is good for that, you can generally get posts for around $0.20/each, and threads around $0.30/each so if you get 1k posts, its $150 (many people have discounts for large orders) and makes your forum look very busy.

I agree that you probably have to create some threads and topics and members on your own... you need to get the snowball rolling.

About promtion, I would go for the social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. seems appropriate for a forum right? :)

    cheers

Start writing consistent quality material on your forum. Get links, Start making videos about the benefits offered on your forum, create a fanpage, start a twitter account. Get yourself known as an authority in that niche and people will come to you

You really just need to post, post and post some more. Then you market it. If you market it with only a few posts, it will look dead, and no one will post.

For a newbie like me, can someone point out what the monetary benefit is from promoting a forum?

You will spend time and money promoting your forum, but unless you're selling a product, what is the end result? How will you get your money back plus profit?
