Long Domain Names

    Are long domain names really a negative? What if it’s a blog and you want to brand it using your own surname. The reason I question the degree to which this is an issue is that most traffic might find you using an autocomplete search engine. It seems to me even if the domain name is long and somewhat difficult to spell auto complete might just as easily cancel out this negative.


    This seems like it would particularly be the case if you use a long but unique name. The searcher types the first two or three letters and wham, there you are. You only need to be one of the most famous sites with those first few letters.

    i have had several really long domain names that achieve #1 rankings. I actually prefer these because you can get more keywords in them.

    For me personally, which one a register depends upon the intended use.

    If I am looking for "returning" visitors - then I will want a short, easy-to-remember, easy-to-spell name with keywords.

    If I am looking for 1-time visitors to the site (such as offering something that they will only need to purchase or sign up for once), then I will go for the longer domain name if that contains the exact search words or phrases that someone will search for in search engines when looking for what I am offering.

    I should have worded that better!
    Yes, I want returning visitors all the time, but I meant that in some instances it is more important to me to have a longer keyword-rich domain name that will rank well in SERPS, than it is to have a short, branding domain name that is memorable, but containing few (if any) keywords.

    Thanks, all. Can someone please address the issue of auto complete and whether its use can negate any negatives of choosing a long or difficult to spell domain name.


    Also, which is more important for a blog or forum SEO, domain name or keyword optimized content?

    domain name can up almost 40 characters but no one going to use it .
    1) Google might take it as spam
    2) Google might not give correct weight on which is the top keywords you target and in the same time you lower down the weight of seo effect on main keyword that you want the rank.
    3) Less people able to remember your domain name.
