how many here own directory of directories (directory lists)?
    how much you make?
    Is it profitable?

I own one directory list and i get some decent visitors, not very profitable though.

Anything marketted to webmasters is not gonna work with adsense or yahoo. Youll have to be selling some really useful and wanted to thing to profit from the webmaster world =P

With directories of directories? No idea. With normal directories, market them enough so people have the trust in submitting their links for a fee to your site.

Totally - i am absolutely swamped with links from my free Unleashed Directory at the moment!

As for making money from a directory of directories - id say the answer is yes however the key will be to keep adding more and more directories to the list - give your visitors a reason to come back!!!

this is not only for the directory of directories type site but generally

if u have many sites, then half of them will make money and the other half will not.

so whether its profitable or not depends on u and not on the directory.

if it makes money you will take care of it and it will show in the directory.
if its not making money (as you expect it) then again it will reflect in the site.

since its not making money u wont be interested in keeping/maintaining it and would look to cash it at the next available option.

Its all in your hands to make it profitable or not :)

Direct advertising seems to be their primary source of income. However combining the directory of directories with a directory submission service seems to be popular as well although I am not sure how profitable it is.

If you have a directory submission service it will mean compiling a list of good directories anyway. So I suppose it makes sense to put it all online and benefit from the direct advertising as well, rather than keeping the list to yourself. You can get a good idea of how much Strongest Links is making from direct advertising, just by looking at their monthly rates page: http://www.strongestlinks.com/adRates.php . I make that $1825 that they've taken this month.

Yup! I heard that... :) But with regards to directory of directories making a go of it?... I have a small one that more than pays for itself, and in fact might do better if I promoted it. Making any real money though with one might be wishful thinking.

    Olddocks,

In terms of adsense or other PPC revenue, the return is very weak.

The levels of traffic are high but we are talking about smart webmasters. They know what they are looking for and how to get it, and they go straight to what they are after. (kind've like a single guy in a supermarket, he ain't wandering around checking out the bargains, you go grab what you need, pay for it, and get out).

The amount of work generated to keep a list maintained and at the top of the game is massive, and you can probably expect some people to chime in on advertising, but really it's a service for the end user.

Info Vilesilencer, the directory list, costs me money to run. Although it does generate advertising revenue, the list in itself doesn't turn a profit. Maybe that's because I'm not utilising the advertising options as best I could, but seriously given the amount of hours put in, its more a labour of love (or one that is going to keep me out of the fiery depths of hell) than a money-making exercise.

I have just recently started working on DirectoryBoss and tend to keep it free.

I haven't started a directory of directories to earn money, its just a happy feeling for me, yaah I never had a directory of directories, I atleast have it now.

So if you talk about money involved with directory of directories, well then it depends on you. As aspidov said, never start a site with an motive in mind to earn out of it.

Serve quality, and money automatically comes in. :)

I don't know about directory of directories.

But I think they are growing.

I think at one time there was that best-web-directories.com and directorylist.org, but nowadays there are quite a few and the number keeps going up.

I personally think that directory of directories are growing and coming more popular - people are realising the need to build quality back links, directories are an excellent method of doing this. I also think that people are straying away from automated submission software which does it all for you so there is a higher dependance on quality lists (such as Dan's) which provide a concise list of suited directories.
