Some guy I was just speaking to said that he had heard that google is going Pay Per click only in Januray, is there any truth in this or is it just a load of rubbish?

Anything with the words "Some guy I was just speaking to said that he had heard" usually is just rubbish

Yes, the worlds #1 search engine, a publicly traded multi-billion dollar corporation, is changing their algo to go all paid.

Makes perfect sense right? Why else would the stock soar today?

Did he mean that Google was going to do away with their "pay per impression" program? That seems unlikely, but not totally out of the question.

considering the placement of this thread, I assumed he was asking if google's serp pages would be PPC ads only... which is so absurd that there's really no way it'd happen.

ppc only actually makes sense, think about it. Just paying $0.025 per click would be more than enough for google to make a killing but small enough for legit sites to pay. Relevence would also go up because who wants to pay for clicks that just use the back button 2 seconds later.

Of course its very unlikely to happen, the closest thing google would probably ever do is maybe blend the top 3 ads in with the other results so they look like natural serps

I don't see google ever doing this, honestly. them NOT doing this when so many others were was part of the reason google became so successful in the first place.

and paying for traffic isn't always an option. not everyone out there runs sites to make a profit, some run hobby sites or non-profits, etc.

if everything was forced to be paid for, then only commercial sites would show in the serps. this wouldn't do anyone any good-- it wouldn't do webmasters good, it wouldn't do searchers good, and it wouldn't do google good.

Google isn't founded on the principle of money but relativity. Google going TOTALY PPC would also kill them.

Visio now I have agreed with you on most post but this my friend I have to disagree. If Google wasnt about money they never would have gone public. Dont fool yourself Google is about nothing more than money.

They might have branded themselves as being a company that cares about the consumer, but its nothing more than a big business branding marketing ploy. Its like a directory that allows you to place your site on there for free and once that site has thousands of listings and a brand, all of a sudden its now $40 a year to be listed in it.

You seem to disagree on alot of stuff :p
Your crazy. Google developed a Search Engine that was leaps ahead of everyone else ONLY for a project for school. They then tried to sell it to yahoo who was to dumb to buy it. They only started running it themselves because no one would buy it. They opened Adwords because they need a way to fund the massive operation. How else do they make money? Why shouldn't they make any money? Just because google is making good money doesn't mean they are all about money. I know Larry and he isn't that type of guy. Of course it is a big business but they still care about the consumer and want to keep relevant results. Even if money was the greed behind the business they would still strive to keep relevant ORGANIC results because they are smart people and know that is what the consumer wants. You really should read the Google book. It has alot of information that explains Google.

By the way, optimisation is spelled perfectly correctly on that page.

Are you aware of spelling differences between the UK and the US? Particularly when it comes to the use of Zs?
