PubCon Recap Day One: SEO Advice From Google

Well the first day of PubCon is over. I must say I learned quite a bit more than I thought I would. The most memorable take-away was during my first session. The topic was Big SEO and Search Engines.

Google had a representative there who spoke last, after AOL and Yahoo bored the crowd to sleep. Google's Search Evangelist Adam Lasnik gave a brief 10 minute overview of what he thought "mattered" when it comes to site design for making Google happy. Some main points...

Speed counts. Slow site response times can hurt you in rankings. People don't like them and neither does Google.

Keep all your related content under one domain! Sub-domains are okay, but don't go breaking it out into 10 different domains/sites. Your site will build up more value and trust if you keep all the content under one umbrella.

    More to come...

    Regards,
    SockMoney

cheers for the update, but Matt Cutts (Google's front man) confirmed that speed doesn't matter on a webpage  strange...

thank you for a post and links

    think it strange, too
but, according to logic, they might mean some significant difference in speed

Ha... No. I picked sockmoney to signify myself as a "smalltime" web publisher when compared to the man himself (shoemoney).

I've updated my blog with more information from Adam's presentation on what Google looks for in regards to quality sites:

Good call sock. Great idea to post info received from PubCon. It would be great to have that happen for each of these types of WebMaster type events to receive info from each class attended. I've never attended any of those events (yet) but when I do, I think I'll do just that!

Thanks. I'm sure plenty of others will be posting on their blogs about the conference. But it would be nice to have it all in one place I suppose. I'll try to come back online tonight or tomorrow night to do another recap.

Agreed that it does sound very conflicting. I guess the question is which one works more closely with the folks who maintain the algorithms? Perhaps if I run into Adam today I will ask about what Matt posted versus what he said.

Google is hosting a dinner party tonight where we can meet the engineers. I'm sure I'll get an opportunity to throw this question out there.

    I'll report back later.

    Cheers,

perhaps Adam was referring to the speed to the user and search engines if everything was on one-domain and matts confirming that page speed doesn't matter? that's what I get from the jist of things

    so page speed doesn't matter
    domain stuff does matter

well theres something I didn't know :p lol

Something may not effect google rankings but can have drastic nasty effects on your visitors and conversion ratio.

no one's arguing that slow loading times are bad for your visitors.

what we find baffling is that two different google employees have contradicted each other: one says loading time matters for the serps, the other says it doesn't matter at all.
