trying to improve marketing techniques

Recently i paid a small fortune for advertising and for footer links, and it never returned any visitors at all to my sites. In fact, on one forum that had supposedly over 100k uv p/m i paid $20p/m and didnt see any trafic results at all.

While im not obsessed with making money, its hurtful when im literally throwing money down the drain with nothing to show for it.

I have several sites that i need to be promoted so that people can find them -> can anyone suggest the best ways to get started? I have read alot of guides / threads and most things recommend spamming your links over peoples blogs and forums, but isnt that a bad thing? I personally hate people who come to my forums and posts ads for viagra, so i dont want to be a scumbag and use techniques that others dont like -> or is that the only way to promote a site?

I agree that posting ads for viagra is bad form. But most forum and blog owners don't mind you advertising your site in your signature on those sites as long as you post useful comments. You might also consider making facebook pages for all of your sites (make sure they're good) and you could probably buy fans from fiverr.com or other such sites. You should also add an autoresponder such as Aweber to your fanpage and site. I'd also suggest meetup.com and look for a group similar to your site's subject to join. As long as your provide helpful comments meetup groups could add some traffic. Also, how's your site's SEO? How does it rate when people search for the subject of your site.

i honestly have no clue on seo though ive followed some tips and tried to make the meta tags and keywords specific to the site and some of my sites do show up in google (but they dont rank well at all.)

personally im studying web design, but they just teach us the basics of building not what to do after they are built.

Don't bother trying to get traffic with footer links ... just ask yourself, when is the last time you click on a footer link!!
Banners on relevant sites are decent traffic source
so are incontent link placement on quality content

    Spamming gets you no where!

Create QUALITY content / build backlinks to them
go for Quality backlinks if you are paying money for them (if they are free, doesn't matter) ...
95% of DP BST Links section aren't worth paying for.

alot of my sites are things that other sites already offer, which means that those services are in high demand. I personally dont invest in sites that myself or my family wouldnt use.

Im not going to mention my commercial sites, but i will mention one of my non-profit sites. toddsabc.com, i made it for my kids and never once thought to monetize it. While the sites not complete its still a highly unique site, thats designed for kids / parents on mobile phones / ipods / etc (or desktop computers for those who are in countries where bandwidth is either low or expensive).
while i cant make money off that site, if alot of people did use that site, i would allocate more time to developing it and invest more in purchasing quality graphics for the site.

one of my commercial sites that i need to promote is filedump.org Ive started to build backlinks by using some free backlink builders but havent gotten much further in terms of promoting the site.

While filedump.org is new (new logo and new design is in the works), ive been running a private file uploader for family and friends for a while now, and its only recently that we decided to make the service available to other users. I know that a quality filesharing service is needed and one that allows for people to share aduIt content would be highly popular to alot of people. All i have to do is try to find the best way, and or most cost effective way to let people know about the site. I definetly want to avoid the mistakes i made before where i paid alot for advertising with no returns in trafic.

Maybe i should pay for some google ads?

You can try with Google adwords if the site you which to target to provide Google Ads place.
You may try to put google adwrods content and text with powerful call to action , i believe it may work better than you paid for a footer link.
Mostly people purchase Footer Link is for SEO purpose and not for bringing traffic. Less people will look into the footer which is below and small .

Online marketing is booming now a days. Many techniques are coming for the online marketing as well as mobile marketing. Social networking sites are also helpful for online marketing. So online marketing should be focused now with off line marketing.

The use of real time marketing techniques improved the results for each of five different outcomes that matter to marketers: an increase in positive perceptions; interest in a product; likelihood to seriously consider, choose or try a product or brand; and likelihood a consumer will recommend the brand to others.

If you have a budget which I get that you do for promotions, then PPC is one of the quickest ways to get targeted traffic to your site. You have already established that footer links dont work for what your trying to do. so could you find higher traffic websites where your target demographic visits and see about purchasing banner ads.

Might sound a bit funny but have you tried looking at banner ads on other file sharing sites. some of the less reputable ones are dropping like flies at the moment so it does seem like a good opportunity for this type of web service. software sites, image sharing site, video sharing sites document sharing sites all seem like good places to test out and monitor the results

If you were to spend money only spend it on 2 things SEO or advertisement (adwords/facebook ads)..NEVER try to BUY traffic....I have only heard very very very few stories where it actually work..and that surprised me to. If you want lasting traffic which converts focus on the basic SEO ways like link building, viral marketing, social bookmarking, etc. Most of it you can do it yourself for FREE. But its always good to outsource and not waste time. Another tip always know what you are paying for. Alot go into advertisements of SEO services hoping for instant results...Know what you are paying for and the benefits it will bring to you.

Matt, you don't have to spend anything on links. Here's what you can do for your site: Look up what design is SEO-friendly (plenty of them on the net), create quality contents, use appropriate keyword (Google's keyword tool), use social media, build backlinks, submit articles, comment on blogs and forums, etc. Sure that's a tough job. But these are the things you have to invest on.
