If you're using Windows, then Movie Maker is a pretty good option (free):

If you want to spend some time learning how to use an incredibly powerful and free application, then look at VirtualDub.
It can get highly nerdy, it's a pain in the arse, but it's good.

If you want to pay some money, get Vegas. I've used AE and Premiere, which are both fantastic, but I keep coming back to Vegas for quick and dirty editing and exporting to YouTube etc.
It's pretty much the only thing I use these days for making videos.

Try Movie Maker first (if you're on Windows). It's way more user friendly.

Windows Movie Maker is indeed a simple editor, but for a decent result, you have to learn some basics about bitrate, codecs, exportoptions.

Has anyone heard of Lightworks? It looks like pretty powerful movie editing software. It is open source and I have it on my machine, but haven't figured it out yet.

You know, I downloaded the Windows Movie make the other day, and can not believe how much it has changed from the last time I used it on Windows XP. It has come a long way, and if you are not doing anything to advanced, I think it will do the job and get it done right.

Windows Movie Maker should get you started but if your wanting to get advanced check out programs like Avid, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro etc... These cost but they're worth it, trust me! iMovie if your on Mac too.
