Which Image format is good for SEO?

I wanted to post this after a friend asked a question in a thread over here

I did a search for the word Jackie chan in Google. Here is the result

As you can see all the images that come up first are *.jpg files. So i jump to an assumption(not a conclusion) that .jpg files are more welcomed by Google. what are your PRACTICAL experiences in this?

Please provide other IMage optimization techniques, so that we can make this as a valuable resource.

GIF is the best picture format suited for SEO as it is lighter than any other formats.

Hi, there is absolutely no difference for Google what image format you use. The same is with the Wordpress or HTML. For google is important how you present your image or whatever.

Here is what is important for google: 1. give description to your image, 2.give alternative text for the image. 3. Give the proper name to your image.
    4. All three must be different and have a keyword in them.

    Cheers

While that is true, you forget one important aspect: human beings !

Sure, you can cluster your page with only jpegs and gifs, but when they look like crap, nobody wants to stay at your page. There are good reasons to use certain picture formats mate. When you only optimize for bots, you are doing things wrong. Very wrong.

Everyone have given a useful explanations. But am doubt is why pictures images are shown first. I mean why is that pictures are shown along with search results? Is that Google has the policy of showing the images along with the searches.?

GIF is the best image format for all Optimizers simply because they are lighter and more SEO friendly than any other formats available. The lighter the content of the page, the better it is.

While that is somewhat true, you ALSO forget the human aspect.... GIFs can only have 256 colors, PNGs 16.7 million. So, if you have a colorful picture, it would be a good idea to use PNG.
