Might just be me but it bugs me people starting sales threads (generally sites for sale) and having things like '$1,000 Potential a month site' as the title. The forum has quite a few users who first language is not English so they may miss the 'Potential' part in the title and just notice the money - I think it's a bit misleading having this in the title. So my suggestion is to disallow 'Potential / Can / Could' types of words when selling something as no one cares what it 'may/may not' make people buy on what the actual earnings are now.
Nobody is going to follow your suggestion... but I posted this a while back that you may find amusing:
The problem isn't with the idea... the problem would be with the implementation. Sure you could just filter specific words... but then people just use other (possibly more annoying) words instead... so you add those words too, and then they just use different annoying words. The only realistic way to do it would be to have a human pre-moderating titles for something that ultimately is subjective.
I guess thinking about it I had thought of just adding it as a rule 'you can't use bleh, bleh, blah in title' and if someone was you could report the thread and give them a slap for doing so - however I know it would of caused more hassle for the mods and they are over run anyway. Adding in the filters would perhaps cause more problems.. 'Potential' would become 'Earn massive amounts' etc so I can see that becoming a pain as well - no matter.. as the sub-section says it's for suggestions - good or bad we all have our own suggestions ..
Something like that might be a good use of Google's Prediction API... https://developers.google.com/prediction/ Using it for various things down the road is on the list of things to do. Then you can have more of the computer understanding the intent and assigning a probability score that the title (or message itself) is misleading, spam, etc.
I made this suggestion few few months ago. The whole thing is: Definition of potential: There is room for improvement, profit, gain, expansion Definition of potential in DP: It new, turnkey, doesn't make any money, made only for the purpose to sell it. When I made the suggestion there was not even close to the number of times that word is used now. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a word used on 3/4 auctions. Also I notice that often when people use the word potential they also destroy the auction info by elaborating all about "It could make...blah" "This is the future", etc. Then they have a listing price based off of their wishful thinking. Of course this will never end but is the word potential making it more popular? Shawn is right. There is no implementation that will solve it. I did offer a possible solution to it being annoying which is split the site auctions to Turnkey/new/less than 3 months old/less than $10 month profit and then have another forum where its for more established sites. This would throw most of the potential sites all bunched together and out of everyone's way. Is that a good solution? Nope, that would be just quarantine them.
