Many of these sex offenders are convicted child molesters. My state has an online sex offender registry that the general public may access. You key-in your zip code and the website displays the name, address, offenses and photograph of every REGISTERED sex offender in your area. This of course doesn't include those that are not registered. When I did the names, addresses and photos of 58 of these people came up. WTF? 58 of these predators live near us. They're everywhere. If your area has such a list, you might want to check it out. You may be shocked.
Be thankful they are registered. I'm glad there are resources where parents can go to research how many convicted child molestors live in their area. Imagine how you'd feel if there wasn't a way to know!
In a sad way, ignorance is bliss. But as a parent you have a duty to know; even if only so you can protect your kids. it's a sick world we live in, and I fear it has always been and will always be one.
Unfortunately, there's only so much we can do to protect our children... that's why I'm glad there are resources like this available to help us be more aware of our surroundings and who might be living next door to us.
I guess you voted yes on prop 83 in CA. Anyway, it has been blocked in court for now, due to some provisions. But others are clearly constitutional. Here is a news article for those who want more details
I actually didn't vote. In any case, I wish this had been around when I was a child. I actually went to one of the websites where you can search for registered sex offenders near you, and it was QUITE shocking to find a man I'd grown up with listed. I had been in his home, played with his children and had been none the wiser. If my mother or father had known he was a registered sex offender, I highly doubt they would have allowed me to be in his home.
When I was back home a few years ago in OHIO, I found out that 26 Registered Sex Offenders lived in our tiny town of around 6,000... This is sad....
I just read the article that you linked to. I have no sympathy for people who committed sex crimes... I don't care how long ago they occurred. That part of prop 83 requiring offenders to wear satellite tracking devices for life is just great. I wish they had that here. Way back when I was a kid you could play in your front yard and be safe. Now I don't dare leave my daughter by herself in the front for even the minute it takes to go back to the garage to get the lawnmower.
Truly scary. Sad statement for our society. I agree with a few here though - on one hand you want to know, have to know, so you can do what's best for your child. On the other hand that info could drive some parents to total paranoia where they won't allow their kids to go out alone ever. Obviously you have to be an active parent but kids need their space now and again too. I think communication is key, talk with your kids about this stuff and make sure they can talk to you (or whomever else they comfy with) if they ever have any fears or questions.
These cats have something that's part of them,...and virtually none of them will reform. Frankly I think most of them should have much longer-sentences.
@ the very least!! this was post 84 days ago but it's def. relevant www.familywatchdog.us from: Sex Offender Map
oo Denise... Where is this California list you speak of? I'm actually a little interested (aside from the ignorance is bliss comment).. I guess i'll go see if google holds the answer
I also think chemical castration for if (and sadly when) they do get out of jail. Give them something to make them impotent for life!
You know, if I wasn't a man it would be much easier for me to agree with that opinion. I think they should just get longer period of time in jail. Even nicer would be if they did some sort of work inside jail. If they were something in particular outside of jail, they'd do it inside. All the money would be divided to fund their sentence and compensate the victim for their life. People that are abused usually have a lot of problems in their life...giving them that boost economically would be some real form of justice. Not perfect, but productive.
i think its a good idea to a degree, i dont think they should put the persons address on though as it could just cause loads of problems/violence etc, which im not saying they dont deserve but in the UK you go on a similar list for things like rape etc which you can be charged off even if the woman was ok with it at the time
I wrote an article last year about passing The Child Safety Act of 2005 and got into a lengthy discussion with a women over recidivism rates. I hate to say this, but her blindness over her husband's past behavior could be a contributing factor to his activity. She attempted to minimize the problem, but I must tell you this: one offense is one offense too many against children!!
