1and1 servers down > 2 days!

A few of the 1and1 MySQL back-end servers are currently down now for more than 36 hours, due to a "network problem".
This means that any 1and1 website which uses DBs hosted on these servers is not operational. Quite an outage.
I wonder if folks have had similar experiences with other hosting companies.

Nope, but I heard that 1and1 is a really bad hosting company. That must be really frustrating for you.

Very frustrating, especially when I'm unable to bypass 1st level support and reach someone who can give me an estimated time for repair.
I guess it's time to move up a notch.
Any recommendations for a reliable hosting company?

I hate server being down. I know how you feel specially when you cannot get anyone who at least says "Yes thing are going wrong and we are trying to mend it."

I have had good experience with http://www.hostforweb.com. I have all of my sites with them. They answer promptly 24/7 and I can get right to level 3 support. (psst - if you sign up mention ebizaffi as the referrer ;) )

It's day 4, and the 1and1 servers are still down - no access to some of the MySQL databases.

If you're a 1and1 customer, you will not be able to access data on db220.perfora.net, for example.

1and1 finally restored my database. It took 5 days. I am seriously considering switching hosts. Thanks for all the pointers - I will check them out.

I would stay away from them if I were you. I've been with them for a couple of months and have been satisfied up to this point. Yesterday they took my VPS down without notice and demanded I upgrade to a dedicated which they didn't even have in stock. I am currently getting setup elsewhere on a dedicated. I will post my full nasty experience with them shortly once my sites are safely away from them :)

hmm. that's interesting. i haven't experienced that. i've had sites with them for over 2 years without any major problems, just a few small ones. maybe it's good for sites that don't use too much bandwidth. Some hosting companies say they'll give you a certain amount of bandwidth knowing that most people won't come anywhere near that amount. If you do then they may take action. Are you getting a dedicated server because of the amount of bandwidth usage?

I had a VPS and they said my sites were taking up too many resources. That's fine, but don't disable my account without notice and have me realize it 3 hours later on my own. Worst of all the support I got after this got me no where...anyhow I will post my experience as soon as I move everything over.

No hosting company will tell you if they disable your account, they can consider things like your recource spending like breaking the TOS. Bastards, let them at least tell you.

That's not true. If someone asks, we tell them. 99% of the acccounts that are disabled here, are the result of non-payment. If you ask why your account is disabled... We're gonna tell ya, as if you don't know.

Sorry, what I meant is that they dont tell you without you asking, like giving you a notice about that they closed the account.
And no, you dont always have to know if you are a newbee. I have been there.

Depends on the violation. I've given warnings for things first yes, but I have also flat out shut people down, ie., pulled the plug because the damage that was being done was detrimental to our network and business.

Violate the TOS/AUP, you are gonna get shut down. I've not seen a TOS that says you'll get a nice litte warning first... Generally these types of TOS violations are handled at the discretion of the hosting company. If the violation is serious enough, and believe me, I've been doing this long enough to know when someone is screwing me, then they will get shut down.

It's not like hosting companies have it out for their customers. We just have simple rules, most of which have been imposed by and generally accepted as the "norm" in the hosting industry. Those that knowingly break them know what they are doing.
