I used dreamhost for years, it's my first choice definitely no matter for blogs or any kind of websites. :)

I can't see how the type of site that you run affects the host. Bandwidth and server load have an impact but not the "type" of site.

    What concerns you most?

Web directories do not use much of the server resources. A shared host would be more than sufficient.

I prefer to look at hosting like this:

What countries or region will i target, what domain extension, so for example if i intend to use a .co.uk and want to target the UK then i would choose a UK based hosting provider and one that has servers located in the UK, this is more important than asking who is the best for.....

You know, im suprised at how often certain web hosts are mentioned when there is a plethora of providers out there, some give amazing support and cost next to nothing and advertise realistic plans, instead of unlimited everything.

If you want to use a script you should look at what minimum versions of say php and mysql are needed in order to run it, then check that the hosting provider (before signing up) has those versions installed on their servers.

You should send at least one message to a web host before choosing to go with them, this is a way to test how quickly they reply and how well they answer your question, although this cant tell you if they will be the same in the future as some companies are great at answering questions up till the point of getting you as a customer then it all stops.

I wish that people didn't ask such general questions like this with such a naive outlook, take some time to learn whats important.
