Do they work? If so do you know of any good UK companies offering the service, one you have used and have proof of good results. I know there is alot of spammy PR style websites that are basicly just like article sites but I am looking a a service that actually work the way a press release should work.

I havan't try press release sites, is it press release the same as forum posting? Please elaborate, because I did some backlinks for my clients and it took me long to up my results.
It depends on your niche how much of a direct traffic increase you'll get. For SEO purposes, it's ok. Your press release is usually put on a PR N/A page, but it's linked to from the front page for a little while. The only thing I think press releases are good for is link diversity.
i've never tried press releases and am quite clueless on the topic. like when you say press release, do you mean news linking back to your site in a news article that you write? or what...? :\
