    just see the left side of top of the page there is a search option.. just type any name over there and press enter. u will find lots of friends.. whom u like send friend request.

    you have to be very careful how you ad friends on facebook, if you ask to many people to be your friend then someone will report you an you will have your accounts ability to request friends disabled.

    Facebook is to make connections with existing friends, not to get to know strangers. If some one delete your request and say he dont know you. You will not be able to add friends for some days. So be careful about this.

    You can always try reaching out to friends of friends -- there's no guarantee but it might lessen the chances of them ignoring/rejecting your friend requests.
