Followers in Facebook

I am doing pretty well on Twitter but want to get started on Facebook. I'm starting to build my Fan Page for my site (and, yes, I've heard there are significant changes).

    But here's my question:

I can't find a good article that describes how to build up the equivalent of followers in Twitter. I know that you can join Groups I guess and you might get some Facebooks followers (or friends or fans or whatever you call them). And I think getting Likes on something helps you?

Anyway, my basic question is this: how can I get legitimate followers of my Fan Page in Facebook? Can anyone describe the mechanics in a nutshell or give me the buzzwords to look up?

Tell your Twitter followers to like you on FB. Put a FB like box on your site's homepage. Start a contest which forces users to like your page to enter. Tell them that if they tell their friends about the contest, they'll have a better chance at winning.

Thx for the tip. But is there a more "mechanical" way of doing it, equivalent to follow/unfollow in Twitter?

Also, can you do a likebox in simple html.

There are more mechanical ways, but I'm not going to suggest them because they are no good long-term. If you just want to increase your follower count and don't care about interaction, just buy likes. I know people who provide that service.

You can't do a likebox in simple HTML, you need to use FB's code.

    Thx for the help.

No, I don't want to buy likes - I'm with you on that. But what if you like other people? Do they tend to "followback" and like you in return? Is there anything like that?

My pages are all simple html although I do have aspx available to me. Is FB's code in javascript or something?

Not really. Follow back is purely a Twitter thing.

Yes, FB's code is in JavaScript.

Okay, but, if I understand you right, you're suggesting that I use my Twitter followers to like me and my blog readers to like me. Then do I show up on their timeline? Is that the reason I'm doing that?

And, also, how does that help me gain NEW followers on facebook? I don't want to just get my existing Twitter followers and blog readers to look at me on Facebook - I want new Facebook readers.

And sorry to be so ignorant!

Yes, get everyone you have currently at your disposal to like you. Then, I suggest you do this: "Start a contest which forces users to like your page to enter. Tell them that if they tell their friends about the contest, they'll have a better chance at winning."

Okay, so the gyst of it is that you have to get a bunch of people on Facebook to like you and then, hopefully, they will tell others on Facebook and you'll slowly grow in popularity. Is that right?

And big question: do the posts on your Fan Page show up on their timeline?

    Yes, that is the idea.

It depends, if they like it or share one of your posts, it definitely will.

Hmmm. So only their friends show up on their timeline? And I assume a Fan Page can't be a friend so, in general, you don't show up on a timeline, right?

This is very strange. I know that many bloggers swear that Facebook brings a lot of traffic, but this just does not seem conducive to a lot of traffic. I must be missing something. It basically seems like the Facebook person has to think of you and go to your Fan Page every day in order for you to get traffic. That's a little different than Twitter where your tweets will show up on their timeline...

For the most part, you will not show up in their timeline.
