How would you deal with this person promoting in my forum?

I have a forum and this person is targetting my forum to promote his sales related to the topic of my forums. How would you deal with this person? The worst is that this person's website has a forum that has the same topic as us.

I wouldn;t mind him promoting his sales but i just dont like the fact he has the forum that has the same topics which he just started up.

Help needed to make a decision. cheers.

Tell him he can only passively advertise through his forum signature, like the rest of us do.

Thanks, i need more opinions from different people. I apreciate it.

We admins discussed about it and we thought of disabling his signature if he continues like this.

First thing I do when creating a forum is have a post laying out the law.

If you don't have a list of rules then it generally becomes a free for all... :(

I'd say have a friendly word with the guy (through PM maybe?) just explaining that you don't wish to advertise rival sites... then explain if you have to warn him again you will suspend him, third time and he's out.

That's what I usually do with people in any forums I Admin...

Censoring the web is silly. So what if he has similar forums, you see them all the time on DP yet this site grows daily. I cannot stand posting where I have to watch my every step for fear of a ban.

Sometimes the best option is to talk to the guy. PM him and ask that he calm down or you will have to ban him because what his doing is not correct. Always be nice and open about what you want. :D

Tell he to stop spamming the forums and use his signature. If he doesn't do what you say, give him another warning and if he stills ignores you then ban him.

At the end of it, he is making you do more work by you having to delete or modify his posts plus it also makes your forums look spammy to others and it will start making them do the same as him.

If he's just spamming, ban him. If he's making posts your users enjoy, let him keep at it. The more activity you've got on your forum (even by somebody passively promoting another one) the better.

unless he is a huge contributor to the forum, only allow him to promote via signature.

I recommend creating a code of conduct for your forums (with more than just advertising guidelines) and making it sticky on the top of your forum page so it doesn't end up lost. Then, create a special area on your forums labeled "blatant advertising" and every time he breaks the rules, move his post to the "blatant advertising" section. See if he takes a hint.

Just warn him first to stop doing that, ask him to put his add in his signature only and if he dont stop even after that then ban him and his IP too.

If he has a halfway decent site, perhaps you could discuss a partnership opportunity with him.

If you're not interested in that avenue, 2 warnings and a ban should suffice.

    Cheers,

Simple warning should do the trick. If for some reason he doesn't respond to that freeze the account until he agree's.

Keep in mind a lot of times you don't know who you're dealing with and violence like banning begets more violence. I had a forum one time and hastily banned someone. What I didn't know is he was the fellow was a lot smarter then me when it comes to computers and kept spamming and dos'ing my server to prove a point. I'd block his IP and he'd use a proxy. I'd delete his account and he'd use scripts to make more. I'd put in a captcha and he'd defeat it. I eventually closed up shop and went on to other things. Just my 2 cents!

    Success,
    Smax
