Who is around? where is Serg & Rob et al What have they got to 'dish up' this month, something top quality for sure
hey now! i have april, october and 1/2 of july too bad you can't always enter a clients work due to their respective privacy wants. ah well.. i voted for you this month serg. good luck.
Well, I'm looking forward to having some additional criteria in this contest, where content and cool modding also count, not just design. Next month, I can tell you that we will have 3 items, but they will be (or similar) - best niche directory - best regional directory - best article directory (?) maybe - best general directory and then there will be an overall winner from those
Great but what would be considered content? 99,9% of the directories have the same content, the submitters go around submitting the same description to 1,000 different directories.
You will find that I often talk about the importance of good content, and not waiting for the submissions to come to you. Believe it or not, there are actually people that work on adding quality links to their directory (but probably not enough). One reason people often say that all directories are just a bunch of links is because they mostly see the general directories here. There are actually lots of niche directories out there too, but here on DP, people are more exposed to the general directories.
I think good content means lots of relevant, quality listings with a good ratio of categories to listings (having 30K listings and only 200 cats is BIG no-no!). A very pretty, heavily modded directory that is empty just isn't a very good resource for the user. Also, a heavily populated directory that is filled with very poor quality listings (do a search for spam keywords like "sex" or "viagra" and see if dozens or hundreds of results are returned) is not a very good resource either. I actually think content is MUCH more important than either design or modifications. But that is just my opinion. I am often wrong.
Very true. On top of good directory listings if I may add, many directories neglect to optimize their category structures, but just stick with the intial directory import which may not be well structured. The very reason of a directory is a "categorization" of the web. A good directory requires constant maintenance of their category structure to accommodate new submissions and growing directory.
Yes, I think it is important to add sub-categories as your directory grows. You should establish a rule for yourself about the maximum number of links you want to have in a category. Once it reaches say 50 links, create some sub-categories and split the links around.
Looks like currently there is a tie between http://ask-dir.com/ - Large thumbshots of webpages for improved user site discovery. - Unique content, each site includes an original review validated for uniqueness with CopyScape. - Thumbnails for categories, america flag colors:red, white and blue. Adversting small banners on the footer is arranged beautifully. http://www.gained.info/ Added Suggest Category, Contact Us; every page has got own counter of Robots Visits; detail pages are professionally mod-rewrited, and got thumbnail, alexa traffic; 'How to Submit' showed instead of Submit button when its not in category; Latest and Top mod-rewrited; tick-box for submission rules; and some in the coolest mods category.
