Which one is preferred 2D or 3D logos?

I have been browsing through different logo galleries like logopond and one thing that I noticed was that there are not a lot of 3D logos in them. Most of the creative work is being expressed in 2D. Moreover, 3D logos are more prevalent in crowdsourced projects. Of course the choice of 2D and 3D logo depends on the clients need and preference. But is there any other factor which may decide the choice?

Other factors could include what service/product your client is promoting, what their site looks like (if applicable) and who their target audience is.

3d Logos are great, but it's also nice to have the same design as a simple 2d vector version, as well. I say this because some forms of print (like newspapers) don't do a great job of printing complex 3d designs. Just my opinion.

2Ds are more practical. They are better in print and when you have to convert your logo to black and white for other media and stuff.

Depends on the client point of view .. its true 2d logos are suited for print also but if its only a website 3d looks appealing ..
    I personally like 3d logos :D

You said it well... "it all depends on the client's needs and preference." There really is no standard answer. It all depends on the context and application. When branding for clients, we usually end up creating many versions of the same logo... horizontal application, vertical application, for use on light backgrounds, for use on darker backgrounds, transparent background versions of all, 2D, 3D, with and without tagline or website, just the icon or image, etc... Just our thoughts. Cheers!

Speaking in a designers point of view, having a 3d logo is a big no-no esp with prints.
But now that we have digital printers some may find it ok to print multicolored logos.

I'd prefer having a flat version for print and 3d for web purposes.

In most cases (sometimes they are okay) it’s safer to go with 2D logos. They are not only much easier to print and remember, but they also give a cleaner more professional look in most cases. Don’t forget that your logo is a huge part in branding and can have a large impact on how many people are attracted or turn away from it.

In normal situations: 2D for print / 3D for web. I prefer 2D logos overall, but have seen some awesome 3D logos lately.

The logo is easier to remember if it's simple. So the simple the better which leads to 2d. Still it's a matter of purpose and representation.
