I am a Chinese and believe it or not, althought I always use Google as my first choice as a search engine, I will end up using baidu.com as my choice of SE when I am searching for chinese-related stuffs. I just don't know why.

Your internet is not being censored? Can you access Wikipedia? The English version?

So Wikipedia is no longer blocked in China? You're not kidding?

The Chinese people are going to get a taste of freedom and want more. I hope they crush their oppressors.

I saw stats one time about search engine shares in china i think it runs down like this:
    baidu: 40%
    sina: 30%
    google: 20%

something like that, 20% is much more then altavista's % of the US market.

Just wanted to add something I read somewhere months ago:

    - The founder of Baidu.com is actually China Google's ex-employee.
    - BlogSpot.com was blocked many years ago and then reopened again to China netizens months ago and is now blocked again.
    - Yes,you can download free mp3 especially the Chinese songs using mp3.baidu.com and of course it is illegal to do so.
    - Wikipedia Chinese version has been blocked, at least a few articles about China's history black spots are blocked.
    - China people use msn for formal conversation while QQ for informal one.

Google was only banned in China from time to time. Right now, everything is OK.

Baidu in China is more famous for seaching for mp3's, movies. You can seach and download almost all the new songs and movies from Baidu search.

China is a totally different country with a very diverse culture. On the internet, everything seems to be in a state of liberty. However, in some countries, content and access on the internet is a concern to the politicians.

China is having a huge growth, any debate can adversely affect its intended outcome, hence the cencorship and control. China has gone through the emperor's goverment, in which control and order is all there is, no free speech.

I remember reading from Fortune 500 about the CEO of Baidu saying they are competing head to head with Google, and that it is not impossible that in 5 years time, China will be taking on Microsoft.

I don't see it as a competition, rather, each has its own market. China is a world, it does not even need to tap into onother market to be strong. It is resourceful and can survive even alone.

China protected themselves well, legally and illegally. They have the control to strengthen their own stance, just like an emperor who has the full power to decide who is right and who is wrong.

There are still room to grow until China becomes a really free country, which most country cannot achieve.

    Baidu too, much to improve.

Crack and mp3 is only illegal in US, UK and Aus. In other countries, they are only legislatively illegal, but you can find them everywhere, even on the street and in shops.
