faster server = better earnings?

i've read many times, in many places that faster server response/page-load times = better earnings.. This makes sense if you assume that someone clicking a link from a search-engine will quickly get bored after 3-5 seconds if that page hasn't loaded yet, and will likely hit the back button and go elsewhere.

I was seeing on my shared-hosting service that at peak times during the day my page load-times were from 10-45 seconds (my site is a CMS, and it's kinda database/CPU intensive).. so i went and bought myself a dedicated server and a higher-end hosting company.. So far during my tests on the new server, page load times never exceed 1.5 seconds.. i'm sure that come Monday, load times will be just as good..

So now we'll see if earnings increase.. dropping from load times of 30 seconds down to 1 second MUST be a good thing.. i'll post back on Monday or Tuesday how things look..

if anyone else has done a similar upgrade, i'm curious if you saw a difference in earnings..

I must agree that server speed is definitely an important factor, but only 1 of many many factors on what determines if your site is successful or a flop.

Server speed is good, but it is not only about server speed that makes your pages load faster. It also depends on how the scripts are written, how big the pages are, what sizes the images are on the page, how optimized your database queries are, etc.

Load times are important, but I think its more from a user point of view as they will bounce pretty quick if the page isn't loading (I know I don't wait if its taking ages).

Good article about this on the BBC this week http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6131668.stm

The speed of a site does improve your sites visitors, that is very obvious and is one of the main rules that you have to consider when designing and scripting any site.

I am always working on trying to speed up my sites. This also includes optimizing database queries, optimizing databases, using a cache system, etc.

Speed is important and is one reason why it can be good to not make your site completely using just flash.

It may look good having a flash site, but the load times can be to long and your visitors will be gone before the site gets a chance to even load.

I've actually tested this, it makes a huge difference. Especially for Adsense ads.

Let us know how it goes. =)

I switched shared hosting to dedicated server 10 days back. No more complaints from my users about the response. Number of users/hits/income gone up a bit to cover the extra costs.

yea, 30 seconds is way too slow, not a lot people are gonna wait that long for a page. so a increasement of speed will make more visitors/earnings. but if the page load in 3 seconds or 1 second... hmm, i don't think that would change a lot.

The thing when designing a site, is the faster you can make it's load time the better your site is for the end user. Although, speed is not the only thing. You need a good design, good content, etc.

You are right. It is not related to Adsense. You are only likely to get more clickthru's is because your visitors are likely to stay on your site for longer. But sometimes, you may get more traffic, but it is not a guarantee that you will get more clicks.

You are right, but faster scripts and smaller webpages also = better faster site.

Well, it's only been a day - and because of DNS problems i wasnt getting a lot of traffic (www wasnt working, only http://) - but even so, this has been my best sunday in months as far as earnings go..
I know that one day is not statically significant.. we will see what tomorrow brings..

I've also heard read several times that a nice snappy webserver does increase your bottom line, which makes sense. I'd have to agree with Peter, "Faster Server = Better Everything".

With a significant decrease in page load times and an increase in page responsiveness you'll find more visitors will actually reach your pages in the first place, AND due to a better surfing experience, more visitors will come back, AND you'll have more return visitors for the same reason.

I'll be keeping an eye on your testing as well there Tearabite.

I recently upgraded my company's website from a slow dedicated server to a faster one, and the traffic to the site increased by a significant amount.

Don't know about earnings etc, as there are no ads on there. But the total traffic went up, and I think it was because the older slower server made people get bored and go off to surf somewhere else. Don't you do it yourself? I always browse in two or three windows at once, and switch to another one while a slow one is loading.

If you've got a lot of traffic and your website seems a bit slow, upgrading will most likely get you more traffic and therefore more money, but of course it will cost you more.

Another way to improve things is to lose some of the images from your pages. Take a tip from Google's homepage - it isn't exactly stuffed full of images, is it?

And don't forget: My mom is still on dialup, so if you want her to click on your ads, keep your page lean.

Do you plan on getting a real dedicated server, a virtual one, or assisted/managed one?
I'd really like to hear from you if you get a good dedicated managed server deal. It's always been a problem for me to move to dedicated because while I am confident in the security of the code I write, I am not much of an admin, and keeping up with the MySQL, Apache and *nix security alerts has never been my thing .
