    go with JAVA! Once you get it you will be able to make desktop apps and web pages/apps easy since the code is the same in all the cases!
    PHP is generating script,but you will have to know CSS,HTML nad other things.Just start learning JAVA!It have a great support/community and you will always find what are you looking for!
    + JAVA is improving all the time and the last benchmarks I saw just amazed me!

    Right now, PHP is more in use but I Prefer java because It depends on cocept of oops and provide more functionality then the other.
