DMOZ is not in business. It is a project of hobbyists, who enjoy collecting and collating sites for anyone who wants to use categorised data to search with. DMOZ accepts suggestions, they are suggestions, from site owners and the public, but editors often use their own resources to find and list sites.Mainly because the suggestions in many areas are mostly spam. If your site fits one of those categories then it might wait much longer for a volunteer working in their spare time to offer to sort it out. Personally, as I have said many times before, I would turn the suggestions OFF and allow editors to build categories entirely from their knowledge and expertise of the subject.

DMOZ has no interest in any value a listing might add to a site, it does not offer a listing service and it does not promise to review a site in any timescale that might satisfy site owners.

Hi jimnoble, with all do respect wanted to ask you what is the main criteria for choosing site to be listed in DMOZ? I followed all the guidelines, submitted in correct category which is very small and have only 6 sites listed, I have submitet just ones about a year ago and still waiting. My site have very relevant high quality content (85% indexed by Google), we work very hard to provide best information for the user, we make free video tutorials and still we not listed while there is 6 websites from 90s with single ugly page website that provides old and irrelivant information. Please tell me what is the criteria?

Can you make your site more like the irrelevant sites from the 1990s when DMOZ was also relevant? That should do it!!

The good news is you are probably the only person to send a submission to that fresh category so your submission should be handled .............. never.

    Joe, i agree with you.

i dont know why even DP has section for DMOZ, DMOZ is the stone edge of interest and all editors just dont know how to work efficienly, they dont value people who submit their site to directory

i will submit request to DP to remove DMOZ from listing, anybody want to join??

DMOZ is a SERVICE for LISTING SITES, yet is not a SITE LISTING SERVICE. Its wonderful to know that it works one way and not the other *boggle*

And it's also clear that DMOZ has no interest in any value it might add to itself by actually caring...

True, removing the forum here at DP would just be one less place they would have to come and spread the propoganda. So I would say no don't do that

Oddly when I submitted my site I never heard anything from DMOZ. Not a "rejection" or "we got it" or "we burnt it up" etc. I figured dust bytes ate whatever reply I was supposed to get. Then I figured, well, maybe I wasn't geting a reply at all . When I originally had submitted the retro chalet's Melmac Central into art or collectibles which of course my site is too. Then when I looked further, there was a small subcatergory with only one other site like mine . Now this is the strange part, I found it odd because my site is the only reference site on vintage melamine dinnerware besides the one listed. The one listed is very old, out of date and has broken links, graphics, and last update was four + years ago. I hope maybe after they catch up on submissions they could put a button on "report this website" where users can report sites with broken links quite frankly they look a bit tacky on there. I would hate for a reputable site like DMOZ to go down with broken links. Hail hail the dust mites.

    1. You saw a 'we have received your site' page after suggesting the site, that's all you get, because they are suggestions from site owners and the public.
    2. There is an update listing button on the top of the pages and if you see a site with a lot of broken links you can flag it up to an editor using that, those are looked at by editors as a priority. But some broken links may not bar it from being listed. It will also not speed up a review of your site. remember all sites are reviewed by editors who volunteer to work that section and can use any data they please to work there.
We do value members of the public bringing such things to the attention of editors.

You were pointed to the sticky because all that information and more is in there and sometimes editors writing here resort to boilerplates because we post the same things so many times.

Thank you for the information. WOW do they really take up from a few days "to a few years"to review sites? WOW. Honestly I did not see the "we have received your site " listed anywhere. Maybe dust mites were in my computer at time of submissions. As for the broken link thing that's a real hard thing to do. There is a site on there that has good content that you can't find elsewhere but sadly most of the links are broken and pictures missing. I would rather see this information listed so people can find it rather than report it and get it taken off. Sad that people with such useful sites don't keep up on them.

I agree with you actually same problem is still with me. And there is one more problem is this time m not able to get that directory list means now DMOZ just open its home page not open the page that show me the directory list.
Is there anyone who tell me about this.

Albert, I think I know what you are saying and asking. I was a bit confused at first at the sub directories and classifications. Like you are saying the main page won't show you all the little catergories. Here is what I figured out. I first decided to find some sites on the web that offer same type information as mine. There's only three others since I have sort a plastic dinnerware historical reference site it wasn't hard for me as I am in a tiny niche to find others like mine . If you have a really broad site that could fall under several classifications I don't know what to tell you. So I figured how how to go in and search the main page for the sites just like mine on their directory and VOILA! I then found the Branchell Melmac site listed there which is actually a friend of mine who created it! I then noticed the sub directory was very specific and not what I had originally submitted mine in. If you are asking how to figure out all the sub catergories the best thing I can say is do your homework to find what other sites like yours are in before submitting so you don't waste your time or the admin's. I am a blonde so I have an excuse.

Please do try and find the best category fit for your site, it will not be deleted if you suggest to one that is not the best fit, but it will be moved. Firstly that means the site has waited, maybe months or more for that review and it is then sent to another category, where it might have to wait again. The reviewing editor may not be able to list a site in the category to which it has been forwarded. Also if the editor dealing with it is not very experienced and has only a slight knowledge of the area it needs to be sent to then s/he may not send it to the correct category and it might have to be forwarded yet again. So if you want a listing it is in your interests to do the leg work and try and make sure that it only needs one review in one category before it is listed.

\\\editors don't just remove sites because of broken links, they too will evaluate in the way you have outlined to see if the site is worth keeping even if it does have some issues. We don't like sites with broken links, but we also are not bothered by how flash a site is, content and unique content is what will be evaluated.

Just to be clear... that link in your signature should over-ride whatever is said here by an editor or non-editor. So while YOU as an editor may move links that are suggested to the wrong location, other editors might very well do what the guidelines tell them to do, and that is reject or remove the link.

Sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed. is what is written in step three of the submitting process that all submitters have to read before suggesting a site.

it looks like DMOZ editors too offensive.

    to DMOZ Editors:
if we are writting here, its means there is something wrong with ur guys submission and approval process, many not satisfied and upset with service. The only thing what will happen, dmoz traffic will start decreasing and eventually everybody will forget about it

Its already decreasing... as for forgetting about it, there are still WAY too many SEO specialists that have no clue what they are talking about and suggesting that people submit to the ODP as if it's a good thing, because they read it on another blog that said the same thing by a guy that read it on another blog that said the same thing buy a guy that read it on another blog that was dated around 2004 when it actually meant something.
