There are a lot of threads about PageRank (PR) many of you don't understand it or have a few missconceptions on PR.

    What is PR?

Google Pagerank was started as a link analysis algorithm, the idea was they would value the links pointing at a site and give it a Rank. If your site had good links then you had a higher PR.

    How Often does PR update?

PR is actually updated 'all' the time BUT the google toolbar is only updated a few times a year.

    How do links Pass PR?

If your home page has a PR5 ranking then this ranking is passed down to all the outgoing links on the home page. This means all internal links and external links. They are a few sites which will show you some Maths on how this is done but thanks not something I'm going in to.

What this means though, is the more links you have on the site the less PR is going to be passed down as it's shared out.

    Can PR be faked?

Simple answer is yes. They are a few blackhat methods which allow a site to look like they have a much higher PR than they really do.

    Obtaining PR for your site

Seems many people here are a little obsessed with getting PR to their site. When you want to increase the PR of your own site then you need links which have a high PR so they pass the rank down. You can do this by simply buying links from high PR sites so they pass the rank down.

This does caus some issues for poeple though, as the pagerank is always updating (just not the visual toolbar) sites will be in a state of flux. You can buy a PR5 links but this could be devauled due to loosing links. What this means is when the PR updates the toolbar it will of course drop some points and could end up as PR4.

To secure some PR to your site you will need to buy a 'few' high PR links in order to ensure that the rank is passed down and you get a good PR rating on your own site.

High PR sites are an authoritative site

This is NOT true. Because PR can be bought (simply buying high PR links) it means that just about any site can have a high PR.

Having PR means lots of visitors?

Again, this is NOT true. As above, you can buy high PR links to give your site a high PR but this does not mean you are ranking highly in all search engines.

Having a High PR means better SERPS?

Again, this is NOT true. As you can buy PR and get a high PR to your site this does not mean you will rank highly in SERPS

    Conslusion:

People are obsessed with PR for a unknown reason, if you are looking to sell links then yes PR is important - if you are wanting to improve your SERPS position within Google then you need to stop looking at PR and look at buying links related to your niche e.g if you have a travel site, buy links from travel related sites.

As a side note: this does not mean buy any old link, you still need to check quality just don't focus all your attention on the PR of the site, it's not as important as you think.

There still have some relation. Quality dofollow backlink can give you good PR and improve your SERP
On the other words, to achieve high PR, you need quantity/quality dofollow backlink, and quantity/quality dofollow backlink i actually helping in SERP.
And if both of the site are in same level, then higher PR site will rank better

Ok edited slightly.. generally it's not true.. and that is true. But of course if you buy high PR links from a good/authoritative site then yes you will see movement in SERPS but I highly doubt enough to rank you #1 (unless from a site like the BBC)

When you say quality, if Google thinks the backlink quality is not good, why will it pass the PR weight?

I have seen PR has no meaning whatsoecver for traffic.

Google is just keeping PR for the sake of keeping it alive.

People like me make/loose money based on PR :) (Although I know it means nothing)

Now a days most of peoples are not thinking about PR, every one wants top ranking in search engines, if you got good ranking in S.E. then your PR also automatically improve.
