Ok so I think I found what I want the name of my site to be but I ran into a problem. The .com domain is listed as a premium domain name and costs $5000 but the .org and . net are like $10 each. The site I am making is an online magazine. Do you think I can get by with a .org or should I look for a different name?
I imagine it will depend on how well you position the .ORG domain in the minds of your intended users given that .COM is often the default in some people's minds.
Org and net hardly matters if you are not on to of the SERPs. .Com is a plus point but the seo is much more important then the dots.
Why don't you just think of another .com domain? As people would look into it as a default when it comes to domains.
It's really up to you. Do you plan on making the site a very successful big site or is it just a hobby? If a hobby then a .net or .org will be sufficient.
Yes it is going to be a very big site. I have 7 employees for this project. And I just added the word "the" to the name and I got the .COM for 10 bucks . I think I will still buy the .ORG just in case someone wants to mimic our site they will be less credible. Thanks guys!
.com is the best choice, if that will not hurt your budget, but I think .net is not a bad extension for online Mag at all. So I would go for .net and if you will get lucky and make some good $$$, you can buy .com later if still for sale.
.com is the preferred, but I wouldn't spend $5000 on any domain name these days. I would buy a couple of books on SEO instead which might run you $100 and then invest that money towards that and branding. Look at Godaddy.com, not the best domain name in my opinion, but they have branded themselves and are a leader in the industry now. You don't have to have the best domain name available to be successful online. On a side note, the only way I would go with a .org is if I was trying to rank an exact match keyword. If it isn't an exact match to your keyword, then go with something else .com in the niche.
Dot com always will be a great choice and as per SEO point of view it's necessary to have .com instead of .org or .net..
Here is what you need to do, If you are going to create an online magazine and you already have employees then the MOST important thing is Brandability! I cant say that enough. If you can afford the .com and great SEO work then buy the .com and also buy the .net .org .info .co Protect your brand. Now, I bet if you think hard enough you could find another .com for far less, even create one if you have to. Try making up a word. Look at these names people made up, Zulily flickr YouTube Zinga Zazzle facebook eBay and of course Google. Remember .COM is King! And unless you really, really need that $5,000 .com then buy it, otherwise just keep looking you will find another one. Trust me
No, .com is not king, and I have destroyed registered .coms with .org. If you think you have the ability to get firstresullt for a keyword.com, register keyword.org not key-word.com not keywords.com not mykeyword.com If your aim is to go for a keyword, get that keyword in your domain and beat your competition. If you plan on building up a brand like lennco said, get a mykeyword.com/keywording.com/keywordshop.com/keywordnow.com. I suggest this because, as has been made evident by the board, .com is the easiest way to fool people just entering the market into thinking you're credible EDIT: I believe in .net more than .com. If you're company is in technology, .net makes you seem professional. If it's magazines or general marketing, .com is what visitors will want to see. If you run an organization, .org...duh. The confusion on TLD usually comes from people who have no idea what they want to do, have no idea on a business model, and are looking for the "best domain" as opposed to the "best domain for their project"
