Custom nameserver issue.

When pointing domain to custom nameservers should all 4 be used. ie ns1 through to ns4 or just use ns1 and ns2?
The reason I ask is I have a bit of an isssue.
When pointing .co.uk domains to on of my nameservers I can use all 4 ns1/ns2/ns3/ns4
Yet when I try that with a .com extension is says ther is an error with the nameservers.
    The error is
Nominet have said they've manually forced the nameservers to propagate again which should solve the problem. Yet it did not. But if I try just using ns1 and ns2 it works fine.

So what is best? Just use ns1 and ns2 as the norm?

    Hello there,

Are these name server all off of the same server? I ask because it does not matter if you have 1 or 500 name server, if they are all run from the same server, when that server is down, so are the name servers. You should try to ping the name servers you are having troubles with as well, and see if they resolve to the correct IP address. I have always found that .uk domains take a long time to update as well, so you may just have to wait longer.

    Regards,
    Chris

Normally only 2 nameservers are used: NS1 and NS2. Check what nameservers your web hosting provider offers to your domain.

.co.uk tlds will only work on 1 and 2 not all 4

I am my own host, but its not a hosting issue, its an issue with nameservers resolving.

It doesn't matter how many you use, but you do want your registered nameservers to match your domain records. If you only register 2 via your domain provider but your host provides 4 or them and they're all set-up automatically when you add a domain, it leads to an inconsistency. However, this inconsistency won't lead to any errors in functionality or stop your domain being found, they'll just produce "errors/warnings" if you ever do a DNS check via something like www.intodns.com.

If you can only register 2 for your .com domains, then just use 2. As long as the DNS service your host provides is reliable you won't have any problems.
