Allow me to explain what i have, what i want to do and hopefully you can tell me if i need anything else. I have a desktop pc, broadband connection with a modem connected straight into the desktop, no wireless router. I have an HTC mobile phone and i hope to be able to use the wifi on my phone elsewhere in the house. I have just been looking at wireless network adapters that connect into the usb port. If i buy a wireless network adapter, is that literally all i need? And i will just need to have the wireless network adapter in the usb port, obviously have the drivers installed and i can then use wifi on my phone around the house? This might be a silly question but if the above is correct, i need my modem on but pc can be off? I probably sound incredibly behind with things, i am but till now ive not used wifi, so not set anything up for this before.
Hi I don't know the correct answer for your question, but I use wireless router which is inbuilt in my broadband modem and I can use it without switching on the PC while browsing my Samsung Galaxy... and as in your case if you are buying separate Wireless network adapater(not sure what is the design or make) you will be connecting it with the modem through your PC if this is the case, then definitely you need your PC to be switched on.. I am sorry if i misunderstood your question.
That will not work. You need to have a wireless router hooked up to your modem. Then any device that has wireless capability will have the internet through the wireless router. You might check your provider - they often have modem and wireless router combined into one.
Thanks to you both, i wonder where those little usb wireless network adapters get used them, i will look at wireless routers.
I don't understand why you want to connect the wireless modem/router to the PC USB? You can get wireless modem which can be directly connected with the ADSL cable or other (whatever it supports) and you can easily access to the wifi (all you need to do is just power on the wireless modem and no need to turn on your PC.
