Copied content and SEO

Lately I have seen a boost in sites created to copy some of my content from my pages. Its clear their intention is to hurt my rankings and make my site go though Panda but is there in the algorithms something that will detect that my site had the content first and not penalize it for appearing elsewhere?

Its getting really stressful having to go through finding out who the webmaster, webhost is an then submitting DMCA.

So if my content appears somewhere else yet I used it first do i still get penalized?

Google has crawled your site and knows that you were the first person with the content. The person who stole from you will be affected by google panda, not you. However, it still isn't right for them to steal your articles, so I recommend you ask him to provide a link back to your site.

Thank you. They are stealing bits from my homepage like a few sentences that even include my site name!

You shall actually report them or email them to ask them to remove the content

Thanks, i did do a google search while i was waiting for some replies and it agrees with you all, it knows where the content first appeared so I dont have to stress too much about my site being penalized just because some lousy webmaster wants to hurt my site.

As long as you have more links, indexed pages, site-links, and such, those sites shall never surpass your rankings, oh, and it helps if you report them to Google with a DMCA.

Google will go after the ones using their content, because they're going to see it as re-used content and that's not what google likes to see. Your site should be fine, but continue reporting those people who're stealing your content, because that'll only help your site more. Good luck!

i agree here. the search engines can tell who was original publisher of content and take that into consideration.

going through the proper legal process of trying to contact them and all that nonsense is just a waste of time. they pulled a dirty trick on YOU - so now go and do them dirty.

write a blog post exposing them. within the post make sure you do some "linkbaiting" deeplinking, h1, h2 tags, meta tags, title attributes, really SEO up the post and blow his pathetic website right out of the engines, while destroying their reputation.

    problem solved

Yeah, going though contacting their host and writing a DMCA is very time consuming. Thanks for the feedback.

These are two factors that any webmaster should be concerned with if they run a content driven site that they want to see good SERP results with.

    1) I was here first. Make sure you are using a Sitemap that pings Google so you get your site crawled as soon as possible. This should result in Google getting to your site first and seeing that you are the original source for your content. If you are providing good content on a site that is Google-friendly with a Sitemap that pings when you add new content, you should see the Google bot roaming around your site within hours of an update (within minutes if Google really likes your site).

    2) Your value to Google searchers. A site that copies your content, even when Google knows that your site had the content first, can rank above you. I see people talk about duplicate content penalty over and over, when they should really be focused on value to searchers. If a site took some of your content, and presents it in a way that Google finds more valuable to searchers, Google may place that site ahead of you in search results. Sure, Google isn't a fan of sites that copy just for the sake of getting more pages on their site, but if a site provides more value to searchers in the eyes of Google, it is in the interest of Google (and searchers) to put that site at the top of results instead of your own. If a site is just copying your content verbatim without you listed as the source, they probably will be buried in search results or be de-indexed altogether. If they are acting as an aggregate and offer something of substantial value to searchers, they may not only stay indexed, but surpass you in search results as well.

If Google crawls you first, you won't get a duplicate content penalty for having copied other sites that were in fact copying you. If you are thinking of penalty in the sense that they surpass you in SERPs, that is entirely up to the value Google places on your site for its searchers.

Panda looks at duplicate content on your website, Google knows content naturally gets aggregated onto other website sometimes automatically sometimes manually however as a Search Engine, they know it is beyond your control and although they are not perfect at doing so, they are good at awarding credit to the author. If your content is written by you, you do have intellectual copyright on it and in some cases you can charge webmaster for using your content similar to photographers who have their images used on other websites without their consent. We have never carried out legal action on these websites but we know it's possible.

Dont worry. Rely on Google Panda. All the duplicate contents of your site will be eliminated from search engine. For more satisfaction, you can mail directly to google, telling them your problem.
