I think the best methods depend on what niche you're promoting, but in general I've found that certain types will work better than others. Those include: Basic SEO, forum posting, guest blogging and JVs, article and video marketing, PPC, and I've been having some fun experimenting with social media stuff like Twitter and Facebook. It really depends on what you're promoting and who you're trying to promote it to. Also, if you're a one-man show, it depends what you're willing and able to do! The "best" marketing method won't do you any good if you absolutely hate to do it and can never bring yourself to take action. In my opinion, it's more important to pick a few things to try and just take lots of action and keep testing and monitoring what works best.

You simply have to go where your potential buyers are. If I owned a restaurant in Chicago, i'm not going to buy an ad in the LA Times newspaper. It just doesn't make sense. So keep that in mind when you are looking for ways to market your website. Are people searching for your product or service online? If so, SEO might be a good option for you. If not, then you probably have to ask yourself the question of what your website is about and what "problem you solve". What solution are you providing? What they searching for online? Where can you find them? Is there a forum or community somewhere that you can become a part of? Etc.
Most effective marketing method as far as i concern is Internet marketing which includes article marketing, video marketing, SEO which is one of the best ways for getting high traffic.
