phpLD owners MUST READ for Categories (seriously)

Discussion in 'Directories' started by an0n, Nov 8, 2006.

It's come to my attention after being in, around and viewing many many directories, that the owners of the directories are missing something extremely important

It's the ReBuilding of their Category Cache.

Well you ask, what is Category Cache? (shame on you)
Anywho, Category Cache is used in several places within your directory.
I decided to make a pretty pictorial to try and help explain...

    First we have the search...

Ok so you have the pictorial view of it. Now lets try and explain it.

    1.
When searching, you are obviously provided with results.
If you do not rebuild your category cahce, the Categories section above (labeled in grey 'Categories') will not provide the alternative and relative secions of your directory that match the key phrase being searched for. (no cache results in no alternative results)

    2. under the Feature label you will see the Category label.
(This also corresponds to the regular links as well folks), you get a direct link back to that specific category where that website is listed.

This is essential for end user ease of browsability, so rather than having to hit home and then rebrowse, all they have to do is just click on the Category link to be driven right back to that specific category in your directory.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we have the Details pages:

Here we have the same reoccurance of what #2 above in the Search section explained.

When browsing the details page, we can go back to the specific sector of the directory without having to click back and rebrowsing.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now you are asking how do i do this and where is it at?

    Very easy to do.

    1. log into your admin panel
    2. Directories->Categories
    3. click on that button that says 'ReBuild Cache' or 'ReBuild Category Cache'

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, if you are seeing blanks in that places that I pointed out above in your directory, chances are that you have NOT ReBuilt your category cache, and need to do so.

Also *note* when and if you add a *new category* you will need to rebuild your cache so that your directory script can create the new structure for you.

I hope this can help everyone better understand their own directories and improve their end user browsability options.

    Regards,
    Rob

    Great post.

When I'm trying to submit to the right category in a directory, I often make a search for keywords similar to my site. I'm hoping that the category will come up next to the listings, so that I can easily figure out where to put my submission. If there is no category listed next to the search results, this is obviously harder to figure out, so I hope lots of PhpLD users read this post and take action.

Ok, so i'm only going to bump this only once for the phpld users who actually care about their directories.

When and if I come upon a directory who hasn't done the aforementioned, I think I'll be evil and just chastise them about it.

    :)
