Does government have a right to ban polygamy?

I think its disgusting for a man to expect two or multiple wives to marry him (and be his servants) and just as disgusting for a woman to agree to such a thing.
Do you think government has the right to tell them they are or are not allowed to do that?

It’s not the government responsibility to do this if 5 women and a man want to marry it should be allowed. These are customs brought on by many religions and governments so we must say they are stupid since we do not allow it. It seems more and more the government wants to control everything we might as well just say it is a Socialist society in the USA now.

I live in a democracy,a government for the people,by the people. It's about the rule of the majority. If 99.9% of the people say 1 wife only, then 1 wife it is.I do not have a problem with this.

I disagree. As long as no one is hurting one another the will of majority has no right to tell him/her how to live.

How about if 80% vote that the other 20% should be slave to the 80%? How about if the 90% vote that the 10% who don´t believe in God, should be killed? You should not have any problems with these things since it is a "democracy". Democracy in reality is more than just a majority rule and it has it´s own boundaries.

The 80%-20% ratio you cited as an example is democracy in action. When you have a ratio like that debate happens, then elections...it's voted on.But when you have a 99.9% consensus that's a firm resolution.....isn't it marvelous how well democracy works?:)
P.S.if the vote by the majority is immoral then that is not the fault of democracy, but rather a failing of human nature.....Quite another issue entirely.

I repeat again, Democracy is not a simple majority rule. Democracy is limited by it´s own boundaries. I also don´t think you can ever get 99.9% majority on polygamy since about 50% of the voters will be men and most of them will like the idea of having multiple wives. You could probably get 99.9% if only women vote on the question. :)

Dude , if I am rich enough I can fill up my house with a 100 women, make them all a couple of babies and never marry a single one of them. Who gives a dung about being registered by some bureaucrat .

Actually, you can be both monogamous and single at the same time.

One of the definitions of monogamous is "The practice or condition of having a single sexual partner during a period of time." This definition says nothing about being married.

what's "a period of time " ? Shoveling it in and pulling it out also happens during a " period of time". With this definition absolutely everybody is monogamous.

99.9% consensus? It is estimated that roughly 30 to 60% of all married individuals (in the United States) will engage in infidelity at some point during their marriage. source

I detect a slight misunderstanding here. The 99.9% I alluded to was the consensus of people believing(the Judeao/Christian world)in one wife per husband.I was in no way referring to any type of marriage statistics .

Yes Govt has the right. Govt has all the right to control social issues. Your personal life is also a social issue in many cases.

Judaism is not against polygamy and actually it was practiced under Jewish law. There is nothing in Bible which forbids polygamy, so there is no support in the above religions for forbidding polygamy.
