Is link exchange a white hat technique? How can I exchange link? How can I find sites related to my niche and who'd be interested in exchanging link with me?

Doing a link exchange won't get you in trouble with the search engines, or any affiliate programs that I know of, as long as you do it in a good way. Focus on relevancy (give value to visitors with each link), dealing 1-on-1 with each site (don't use a link exchange service), and don't do it in excess.

As for finding sites to exchange with, Google is a good place to start. Start doing searches for your niche related keywords and look for contact information on the sites that you find. Most sites should have some form of contact listed (typically a contact form or an email address listed). Cold contacting sites you find in Google is probably the best way to get good link exchanges set up. You may contact a lot of them before getting an exchange, but it is better than being lazy with it and getting penalized by Google when you make too many poor exchanges.

    Thanks for the useful reply!
But wouldn't it become reciprocal links? I've heard that reciprocal links are not good for ranking well in google? Someone contacted me for link exchange a few days back and he offered me to put my link on his PR5 website in exchange for his link on my PR0 page. Why would he do that?

he might have been linking a different site. something like a 3 way link. you like to one of his sites, and then he links to you from another one of his sites. i have been asked this as well.

Exactly! I guess he must be doing this. I exchanged link with him. Is this ok? And how do you exchange link? I just made heading "site partners" and mentioned his site below. Is this method correct?

however, contextual is better, and he would probably prefer a link within the text.

If that is what he wanted, sure. Make sure the site you are linking to is relevant though. Reciprocal links are okay as long as you don't overdo them.

Google likes any relevant link, even reciprocal ones, as long as Google thinks that the traffic it sends will appreciate the link if they happen to follow it. The "reciprocal links are bad" theory is just wrong. In the current world of Google rankings, reciprocals are fine as long as the value is there for visitors.
