    Hi,

Can anyone tell me if using sub domains has any benefits for seo ?

    I have 2 options ...

    1) http://www.m y s i t e .com
    2) http://subdomain.m y s i t e.com

    Thanks

What do you mean "using" subdomains? Using for what? To do what with?

Sub domains are seen as seperate websites by the SEs so using them is a strategic choice depending on your goals.

If you mean instead of using a simple directory of the main site, then I don't think it matters much unless your main domain is aged and has lots of links and trust from Google.

But to Tops30 point - what are you trying to achieve?

    not exactly...

in some ways they are, in some they aren't. one great advantage of subdomains is that if someone googles widget in google and you have redwidget.yoursite.com and greenwidget.yoursite.com and orangewidget.yoursite.com it's possible that all of those may appear on one page. very nice advantage. that's an example of them treating subdomains as seperate sites.

however, with google, subdomains are treated as part of the same domain when it comes to the sandbox. if you have a site that was never sandboxed, put subdomains on it instead of making new sites on new domains-- they'll fare much better.

MSN seems to worship subdomains. I'm often seeing new sites with subdomains that have the search term in it that are nowhere to be found in G or Y appear on the first page of MSN.

if you didn't understand it from my previous post, yes, there are advantages to doing so ;)

being listed multiple times on one page and avoiding the sandbox (assuming your domain is trusted and old) are the two biggies.

I've used subdomains as mentioned here. It's an interesting test but I don't think it's made any difference to the SE's or Hits...

    e.g.

    http://funny.addanimage.com/
    http://adult.addanimage.com/

I've only got re-directs on these to specific pages so I'm not sure if I've followed thru enough to get these listed.

As digust points out, subdomains in general work much better with aged domains.
