A real directory can take years to develop and as much as $50,000 to promote to a decent level of popularity.

it really depends on many aspects of the site and it really varies from 1k-50k. gotta think how professional you want it and what kind of features you want in your site
phpld has a free script but its pretty horribly outdated right now. There's a couple free wordpress plugins that will create directories for you... so yes you can do it for next to nothing if you want.... or spend thousands. Up to you
Well its not that costy at all if you "JUST" want to fulfill a wish of being a directory owner, but its diamond costy if you want to make a successfull 1... promotion devotion quality great design proper maintainance and great standards are required to make a SUCESSFULL 1
When I was starting my directory, I decided to go for a paid script.. It was quite easy to install and you can be up and running within one day.. It cost $75.. Then just the costs of a domain and hosting.. The rest is up to you.. You can invest in advertising, SEO, outsourcing etc. And you can do it all yourself for free.. But the investment of your time is necessary always..

You need the following to start a good directory website 1. A domain name - $10 or less 2. A hosting account - $50 or less or zero if you already have a multi domain account 3. A directory script - Free to 100$ to few thousand 1000s if you go for custom design. I have been using paid version of phpld (30$) and premiumprss (80$) I like the premium press very much. PM me if you want to see some examples. Promotion is most members talking about here. But from your thread I clearly understand you mean start up cost. So, it can be as less as 10$ as someone said above. Ideally, I will suggest a premium script and you can have a great directory for as less as 100$
You can use hostgator server in order to have affordable server. It will cost you around $100/yr.. If you choose any unique theme for wordpress for directory website then it may costs you around $125 include WP theme + Server
