I dont think there's any alternative to DMOZ. That's a good thing as I really dont think I want or need any alternatives to DMOZ.

Even though I own a directory, I am skeptical of the future of directories. I dont think directories in general, including DMOZ, have any future.

Do you mean directory.plidd.com which is a subdomain of plidd.com a social networking site?
If that’s what you are referring to it is PR2 and has a total of 260 entries, unfortunately I don’t think it can be considered a credible alternative for dmoz.

Yahoo Directory has already been suggested a number of times and yes it is an alternative but it isn't free as dmoz is.

Today, the directories have lost value. Focus on producing good content! ;)

Nothing can beat dmoz at the moment if you talking about high quality human edited directory. But if you want get listed there, someone can do that for you. Most of them are black hatters I guess. Or buy dmoz listed domain instead.

Dmoz is still a PR8 site so it does still have value. Good content alone is not enough to guarantee success.

Ah, value to who or whom exactly? To the ODP? To the one site that has a follow link on the PR8 Page?

I would argue that good content is almost always key to prolonged success.

For me ( and I would add that I am one of the many who is not listed in Dmoz)a link from any page on a PR8 site is desirable and has value. Having said that,
many of the internal pages have PR of their own, and unless I am mıstaken all links are dofollow.
I am not a fan of Dmoz, and is after all only potentially one link and like others I already have links from other high ranking sites. Good content is of course key to sustainable success, my argument was simply that it is not enough by itself, otherwise is all SEO a waste of time?

A nofollow link from a PR8 site does not mean anything.

A link from a PR8 site that is on a deep linked page that is PR3 that shares that link juice with 50 other links is equally as inconsequential.

That rules out most of my potentially high value links then and yet I still have PR4.

According to me Dmoz listing is not so important nor directory submission rather add more to your website, follow onpage and offpage optimisation tactics and be active on relevant forums for better traffic and publicity.

You may include Freenewspaper.Org in your list of Dmoz alternatives.
Some directory sites like that are organized in categories and the website itself has pagerank 2.
