I would say that is a combination between 2 things: 1. On Page - that you have a site with quality content that is targeted for those keywords that you want to rank high for. it is also an advantage if your site is frequently updating and growing with new fresh content. 2. Off Page - that you continiously get new quality backlinks from different sources - blog commenting, link baits, directories, bookmarking, etc.
Daily update in your content area like blog, article and rss feed. Build do follow links or social media update.
Get lots of links to your site. Make sure your links look natural and they are in-content links, not spammy links like profile links etc. One of the things I use is blog commenting with scrapebox and posting on blog network like seodestiny etc..
Apart from on page and off page, Consistency and patience. I find them more essential in SEO. If you give up then you can't reach your goal.
On page you should really have consistency on the content you will be putting out. Make a weekly or daily goal on how much content you are going to put out for your site and stick with it. Make sure the content you're writing is on the keywords and actually provide value to the people that will read it. Back linking, blog commenting, forum participation, etc.. and a lot of other stuff to advertise your site and build strong relationships with other people within your niche is also very important. What I listed above is mostly the process of the SEO journey. The hardest part is having a clear mindset to keep yourself progressing and moving. It's finding the motivation to keep going when you know you're putting in the effort to adding value to your site and not seeing the results. But if you don't give up and trust in the process, the results is a guarantee. You can't always be worrying about the money your making either. You have to put your focus on the quality and the value you have to offer to other people. If you get that down, the money will eventually come to you. But basically, if you plan to jump into SEO, you just gotta jump in all the way and don't look back. Believe or not, SEO is very simple but not easy.
