Hi all - We bought our original domain back in 2001, at the time didn't really know anything about internet .. blah, blah ... a few years later someone bought the .net version - so i quickly bought the .org, .co.uk, .info, .eu .... the domain is our registered company name (uk and wales). I now see the .net has become available or re-sold - it's on a landing page and at the bottom i see this message :- Why am I seeing this web site? i have contacted "info@whois-help.info" without success? Any help would be great about this. Cheers
there are generally only two ways to get a domain you want back: 1) get it back via legal means. more often than not, however, you don't have the legal right to the domain. it's a bit complicated. if I owned ebay.org but it was totally unrelated to ebay.com I'd have a decent chance of keeping it... at least in theory, not exactly easy to stand up to a legal team lik ethat. 2) buy it back. usually they ask absurd prices if your site is remotely popular. I own a .org for one site which is fairly popular, they wanted 25,000$ for the .com. to buy it back, look at their whois info. phoning them may be a better option than emailing them.
Your .net if you never registered it in the first place? I don't recall anyone in authority saying one has rights in a domain name in extension B just because they registered it as extension A. As disgust answered, unless you can demonstrate legal rights to the domain in question, then you have no more rights to it than the 2 of us can ever have. You either buy it from its current registrant, demonstrate such, or move on. I honestly sometimes can't understand why some people believe they have all and any rights to any domain name under any extension merely on the basis of having one.
Disgust, thanks for the reply, I've now found a telephone number for the registrant, and will be calling today, our name is trademarked so shouldn't have many problems if we do, i'll instruct our comp lawyers. Dave Zan ... err what rattled your cage! please read the original question, i never said that "I have the rights to it" i was simply asking for advice ... "I honestly sometimes can't understand why some people believe they have all and any rights to any domain name under any extension merely on the basis of having one." err if you was in business, you would understand
Just call them up and tell them that you are the trademark owner for the phrase and you are ready to pay $50 for the domain and they should sell it to you or else you might be forced to think of other methods to get the domain (say it this way) IT
The reason for my opening statement was because the title of your thread said "Need advice on getting my .net back!". Then it turns out you never had the .net of your domain name to begin with. I definitely understand your position. But when people post what turns out to be inaccurate information, some people might take it as gospel truth and start developing unrealistic and even wrong expectations. I've been in business long enough to see it happen time and again. That's why I'm being as damn careful as possible when I post online lest I contribute to it and potentially do more harm than good. Anyway, you say your name is trademarked. So do what you have to do, and I sincerely hope you'll do the right thing. Good luck and good hunting.
