Ebay actually makes money. It's profitable and is not advertisement-driven. Google bought youtube because it integrates nicely into the advertising platform.

I doubt Google would want to get into eBay, that's too much of a headache. With all the fraud going on with that, let PayPal deal with that. I don't think Google Checkout wants to face any of those problems, or a bad reputation, considering they've just launched. ;)

Google can afford ebay, it will just roll some stock options off there toilet roll, thats what they did for youtube.

If word got out that ebay was going to be bought by google, there overpriced stock would go even higher! Making it cheaper to buy ebay.

It would make sense for Microsoft to buy Ebay, as Microsoft, unlike Google has enough money to do it Cash in hand. And it would make them an extremly dominant force against Google and another massive income stream.

Im watching google, I dont know how they are going to survive as it feels like a dot com boom. All the same mistakes, high stock prices, investing huge money into ideas with no business plans or money models(only revenu google has, is its adwords & adsense and some enterprise search stuff). They even admitted to buying YouTube using non standard business practices.

Google has been reported, to be spending $30mill/day/project. They have money to burn.

What & your saying youtube wasn't making money....

Google will probably save money in the long run from not having to pay youtube rediculous cheques

Nah, i don't think Google would buy Ebay, it would come to billion of billion of dollars; no doubt Google has that kind of capital, but don't think they would invest at this juncture after Youtube acquisition.

It doesnt make a proffit. It has nice revenu but no proffit.

Im sure you can google and find that goolge said when they valuated the company they didnt use "standard practices".

YouTube is a bad buy, in the fact it doesnt make money, its loosing money. But its worth a fortune due to its alexa rank, popularity, brandname and audience.

If Google and eBay merge, it will create an Internet entity so enormous that it would suck everything into itself like a black hole.

No need to worry yet, though, thank Allah. :p

I would think the buyer in this hypothetical situation would be eBay
They have the money "I belive" And would cut their advertising costs with PPC in a big way ;)
I Would worry considerably more if eBay bought Google than the other way round
eBay is all about the money period.

    Interesting point Pierce.

I couldn't agree more with you. I can't for the life of me understand this strategy that Google is implying of throwing hundreds of random hooks on the sea. Instead of focusing on improve their bread generators, they are burning money on projects that quite simply don't make any sense.

Hello? Ebay is A LOT bigger than YouTube.
Equity financing is NOT an option for a $45+billion purchase. That would kill Google.

Okay, stock options arn't always the way to go.

Take a loan out, i'd like to see a bank refuse google a $45bn loan. Espically as they would be buying something that returns money.

Youtube is bigger than Ebay. It doesnt make money, but its bigger:

    prefix - alexaholic.com/youtube.com+ebay.com

Google doesn't interest with eBay because they know eBay isn't sold.

I think Google is interested in acquiring every big chucnk of the net that would fit into it's portal, and that includes Ebay

Yeah, but google does make money from ideas.

    AdWords
    AdSense
    Google CheckOut

Im fairly sure i dont have to say anything about that.

Blogger - encourages monitization with AdSense
Analytics - more than 5million impressions? make sure it works by burning $30 a month to a linked AdWords account.
Gmail - theres ads in gmail (for me in ireland at least)
WordDocs, Spreadsheets, Calandar, Google Search, Google Base, Gmail, Reader - google is the master of data mining, they probably use everything you write in them to better understand how to target AdWords/AdSense at the populus.
Trends - encourage people to build websites baised on trends, in hope they monitize it with AdSense
Google Acedemic Research - when your working with a company, and they need a document server, who you gona call?
Youtube/Video - community building and to keep people in the small circle also nice umbelico cord into popular sites(there competition), bebo, myspace, insert soical network here.

Google is a clever company, just a bit top heavy. The new site they took over jot.com, which provides wiki's, i dont know, but why not ehh?

Nothing is free in this world.

Why don't we settle this by putting Ebay up for auction on Ebay and see what the price gets to before it gets pulled down by Ebay? I need some help with the reserve price.

    :D

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that businesses were considered bigger if they recieve more traffic.
Come on, now. Ebay's net income exceeded $280MM last quarter. YouTube did nothing.
Simply put, Google can't just come up with $45 billion to buy Ebay.
