Seriously? Have you seen the millions of freewebs/etc sites on DMOZ that have no content at all, are horribly designed, and have been dead for years?

They don't care what your site looks like... never really have.

The best is to simply ignore DMOZ and stop giving it so much importance. With time, it will eventually go away when there would be no one submitting site to it.

Quite interesting information. I tried listing 13 different websites and nada.. none have been accepted. If they call it that they review for guidelines, these have been developed by the top SEO developers and still nope.. I wonder...

Sorry DMOZ does not undertake site reviews, if it is guideline compliant it will be listed when it is reviewed, if it is not guideline compliant it will not be listed. All categories have editors, any editor further up the category tree is an editor there and several hundred editors are editors in all categories in the directory.

Before you ask, it can take from a few days to a few YEARS before a review takes place, weather it has been done amateurishly or from the crack professional in the business, sorry what a site looks like does not get it a review any quicker. And by the way, don't resubmit it can prejudice getting that review and too many submissions can mean its treated like spam.

The above statement at best is misleading, at worst an outright lie.

The hierarchical way in which DMOZ is created means that the higher up editors (top of the tree) can edit any category.

Therefore the statement above could be deemed as true in "Anonymously's" eyes if DMOZ had just a single higher up editor left as "The Last Editor" and everyone else went home and never returned as an editor.

    The posted stats are:

    93,429 editors - over 1,009,376 categories

so there is one editor for every ten categories and most editors are inactive. Because there is no way 93,429 people could be so delusional as to think that this "hobby" is relevant anymore.

Even our Qryztufre is one of those numbers and he only edited about 6 edits and that was years ago. As usual, you don't let good facts stand in the way of your fiction. Those stats as you have been told, but just for new readers, refer to any editor whoever worked on the project, to say thank you for their contribution, even small ones like Q's.

Another lie... I had MANY edits! Only added a handful of sites, but I edited them several times as I was learning my way around, seeings as when I got there all the help files were missing, broken, or otherwise unhelpful.

On a related note, some categories may not have editors. Categories are edited by editors who care to edit in them, if no editor cares to edit in a given category, that category has no editor. Yes, they CAN, but if they don't, that still counts...

And you are correct about facts getting in the way of fiction. joeventura's numbers are WAY Off! There are a LOT fewer editors then he has listed, you said so yourself. So in reality, his stats on getting an editor to review a site is MUCH MUCH MUCH lower then what he is implying. Thanks for pointing that out!

The 93,429 is total number of editors that joined ODP. Most of them never did anything after listing their own site. Many were removed for different reason like not logging in. The real number of editors who can edit in different category and the money making part of ODP is about 200-300.

    Thanks for solidifying my point.
    A million categories,
    300 editors,
Go buy a lottery ticket your odds are better there than getting an DMOZ listing!

But the good news is that with 300 editors, there is still an editor for EVERY category LOL!

Last one out please turn off the light!

200-300 is the number of editors with higher permissions (CatEditall/Editall/CatMod/Meta/Admin). There are a lot more who have permissions to edit one or more categories.

Yeah ok so somewhere between 300 and 90,000?

Its funny how not a single editor will quote a single accurate number for anything.

    How many editors?
    How many submissions per year?
How many entries added per year?

For all we know there are 20 editors left

I don't really understand why those questions are useful outside of the editorial community. The reason you won't get an exact number is available at http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/communication.html

Secrecy is a necessary part of every corrupt organization, just look at the DMOZ editors role model, MAFIA. :)

It is actually quite difficult to say, give or take,we always have editrs joining, some of the editors who do join do no work and just time out, but that takes 4 months. Before any editor has permissions withdrawn they have to be inactive for 4 months and some editors do only the one edit in 4 months, so which ones do we count as active?

But as photofox says, why should it be of any real interest? We could have 10,000,000 editors but if none wanted to work certain areas then there would still be a large suggestions pool.In just the same way if editors did not want to use the suggestions pool to build categories then there do not have to.If one has one hour per week to spend editing and one spends that working through the suggestions pool and at the end of several weeks has listed only one or two sites because the others were not guideline compliant, what would you do? Remember that the editor is working in their spare time and wants to build categories NOT just keep emptying the suggestions pool. And the editor knows sources which produce good sites with which they can build the categories that s/he wants to do then that is what the editor will often chose to do with their hour on DMOZ.

That's why we say we are not a listing service for site owners. We are here to indulge our hobby of building categories. That may not be the object of many directories. Usually that is to make money for the owner and for site owners to get themselves listed and seen. DMOZ is about editors going about their hobby and then offering the result for anyone who wants categorised data for working on the net.

In all that you want us to be consumed with what seems to be your passion for some sort of accuracy about numbers, edits and editors. We do sometimes publish those figures internally, as a spur and incentive for editors to spend more time building categories, but why it should be of interest to others I fail to see. I don't really want to know how long you spend on your site, how many posts you make on forums, how long you spend on your stamp collecting and personally I don't know why DMOZ should use its volunteer editors time to work out stats that say pretty much nothing just to please people like you who seem consumed because you have not got listed.

The important part being that the number of editors is NOT covered by that part of the guidelines. If it was, it would NOT be posted on the front page of the ODP itself.

If its of no real interest, then why bother having it on the front page of the directory itself. It would seem that DMOZ finds it of interest, or they would not publicize it at all.

They did post the number of active members on the blog a year or so ago though, which who ever did that would need to be fired according to photofox's post, or wasting everyone's time according to Anonymously. If I remember correctly it was around 5 or 6 thousand.... please correct me if I am wrong.

Why is it like talking to a wall when discussing anything ODP related with editors? One would think that they would actually be interested in the directory project, but as all can see in this thread, editors would rather fuss and bicker then be helpful in any way.
