Are they ever going to update again? I finally got into dmoz but it looks like the Google directory has not updated in almost a year.

Do you think that dmoz gives something more than just a link?

I don't care what people say, but DMOZ is indeed not just one more link.

As most of you know it is used as a reference by Google to get descriptions and it is widely perceived as a sign of trust by Google. Additionally let's not forget about the advantages of the syndicated nature of DMOZ.

    I agree.

To go with the original question: google-directories is indeed hardly updated (if at all) anymore. But google does take the new links into account for its normal search-results and it can make all the difference in the world. This isn't to say that getting other links to a website can't have the same general effect.

considering google is obviously a trusted site, yes, I would think it's safe to assume there is.

Doesnt much matter what you say either....

DMOZ links are useless...Google rarely relies on DMOZ for descriptions as most sites are not in DMOZ..

Im kicking DMOZ linked sites asses over and over and over and over again....

And where did you come up with DMOZzzzzzzzzzz being syndicated???

What once was, will never be again...get out of the past and into the present....

you're missing the point... the fact that they do use it for some sites is significant; it means they trust DMOZ enough to believe that that site title is accurate.

    it's still syndicated... http://rdf.dmoz.org/

I do not know about the signifigance behind something where its barely used....

I will remind you of this little Google offering ....

    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">

Kind of blows a hole in your statement, since Google apparently doesn't think that highly of DMOZ....

Kind of like the Fed saying Bank A can be trusted... but perhaps you should use Bank B instead......

    A contradiction indeed..

also and rdf file is not truely the meaning of syndication.... I have them too but that doesnt make me anything more than a someone who can read and who knows to use them on occassion

Probably most directories have them and theres a lot of those my sites would never be found in....

it's used a lot. do some searches...

that has nothing to do with google not trusting dmoz. that's like saying google allowing robots.txt and denying access to their crawlers means they don't have confidence in their technology...

what noodp is about, quite simply, is the rights of the webmaster. dmoz is human edited, mistakes can be made. not only that, but webmasters want to be able to control what their title says... google gives them that option.

if they didn't trust dmoz at all they wouldn't be using their data in the first place; not for site titles, not in their directory, etc.

how does dmoz not "truly offer" syndication? they offer a data dump, they have a specific open license granting you the rights to use it.
