Blog Network vs Single Domain?

Which scenario would be better in terms of SEO:

    1. Blog network (with wordpress MU).
    - Each blog on seperate domain
    - Every blog is a sub-niche of one general niche which unites them all at the main blog.
    - One forum on a separate domain with the same userbase, containing sub-forums for each domain (sub-niche)
    - Considering all of the domains are branded by keeping one same style. (ex. Icook.com , Ieat.com , Idrink.com etc.)

    2. One big blog on a single domain (Icook.com) covering all of the topics of the sub-niches from the first scenarios with a single big forum on the same domain again covering all of the topics from all of the sub-niches.
    - no other domains exist..

    3. A bit of both 1 and 2. One main blog on single domain with a big forum and many other a lot smaller blogs with small forums on their domains
    - Again branded in the same style as in 1

So what do you guys think? Also if you choose 1 or 3 do you think it is necessary to have all of the blog domains on separate C-class ip addresses to get the best results in rankings or is that really only a myth?

I prefer one blog per domain then it is interlinked with each other.

When something bad happened on one of your blog, you still have another one.

Why is that? Care to elaborate a bit more?
Is having blogs on different domains/same ip any better, worse? Or is that not important for SEO?

Single domain should be better if your writing capacity is 2-3 posts a week. But if you have a team of writers publishing a few articles a day, than maybe more domains can be considered.

But if it is a Wordpress MU installation and something happens to one of the blogs, it could happen to all of them :)
