    Off course they are still popular. If you do directory and article submissions by using any software it will come under black hat seo and Google will penalize you, so be careful and do only manual submissions.

    the effectiveness is dropping but it still good for SEO if the directory is quality directory. There are too many crap directory nowadays

    Definitely submit to dmoz.org it's still worth it. Ezine is still ok, but only submit original content.

    I actually applied to be an editor in a niche category, they said they had enough editors. Meh...

    It took one of my sites 2 years to get listed. Also note, re submissions pushes you to the back of the queue, don't do it.
