I need some information. I recently purchased a reseller hosting pack from hostgator. When I tried to buy dedicated IP for my hosting, they said that I need to buy SSL cert to get dedicated IP! SSL cert minimum price is $50/per year. I don't have any interest to buy SSL cert for my sites, but I need one (at least one) dedicated IP for my customers. Now I badly need a dedicated IP for my hosting. I don't know how to get it from hostgator. As they keep denying me without SSL. No is there any hope?? Any information? Any help from some expert persons? I am not expert in about IP's etc. I heard about DNS hosting (or services). If I buy DNS service from some providers (dyn dns, everydns itc), will they provide me a dedicated IP?Or they will be also providing shared IP?
DNS providers will not provide you a dedicated IP. They don't provide hosting servers, so the IP with their services, would still be HostGator's. The thing with the SSL certificate is due to ARIN justification requirements most likely. Hosts are required to justify IP usage beyond a certain point, and an SSL certificate (since it REQUIRES a dedicated IP) seems to be one of the few acceptable reasons these days.
You're welcome! Nameservers and anonymous FTP used to be the two other big ones, but not all hosts accept that as justification anymore either. Most will tell you that you don't absolutely need your own IP addresses for your nameservers (particularly if they offer shared whitelabel nameservers for you to use), and you certainly don't need one anymore for anonymous FTP. Who uses anonymous FTP anymore anyway? ROFL! I would seriously recommend you take another look at SSL providers. You can get them FAR cheaper than the $50/year you were quoted. RapidSSL certificates come to mind, at just $9.99/year from most places. That might be worth it, if you really want an IP.
Yes, I am also thinking about buying a cheap SSL to get the IP. I would like to buy GoDaddy Standard SSL 12.95/per year with coupon.
Not really sure why they are giving you the run around over 1 IP, but each host is different in what they require and offer. I would agree getting a cheap SSL should allow you to meet their requirements. But before you buy it I would check with hostgator and confirm they will honor it. Not saying they won't but they did try to sell you their $50 SSL already.
