The ultimate Directory Script??

    Hi,

If money were no option what would be your choice for the ultimate directory script?

I've been looking at www.edirectory.com - but is there anything better out there than this?

    Thanks

The best script is one you have designed and developed for your specific needs but the one your looking at is quite flexible, but it depends on the type of directory your considering developing.

Yes I would agree with that certainly. However, with regard to "time to market" being a key factor I am trying to assess directory scripts out there and if there is anything better than edirectory.

    Thanks

Between my own experiences, reading these forums and listening to one of my clients talk about his site; I've come to the conclusion that there is no "ultimate directory script". According to my client, edirectory has issues just like the others do. They all have performed excellent support on occasion and have failed miserably on others. All of the COTS directory software seems to have things it does well and places where it is not as robust.

From what I've seen and depending upon what you want to do, edirectory may be more than you need - kinda like buying a Rolls Royce to drive across the street. There are many folks here successfully running sites on phpLD and eSyndicat. Both are highly customizable with basic php and web programming skills.

All that aside, stoner had it right - the ultimate script is the one written specifically for your needs. But, it does have the drawback of taking significantly more time to launch that a commercial off-the-shelf product does.

Like the others said, the best script is one which fit your needs perfectly. In my case, I have gone with phpLD because other scripts are not suitable for my needs, not because other scripts are inferior to phpLD.

I've only used phpld and have always been pleased with the paid support they offer, for a non-techy like me it's an important thing to consider.

IMHO the best directory script is PowerSeek presently used by directories such as
directory.v7n.com and AMRAY Web Directory and a few other high quality directories.

PowerSeek is product of Focal Media and if $399 is not a problem for you, then you should try it.

Amray is actually using this one: http://www.tolranet.co.uk/software/directoryscript/ but PowerSeek looks interesting, no doubt.

    You're wrong.
Tolra uses PHP and PowerSeek uses CGI scripting language.
AMRAY uses CGI based script thus AMRAY uses PowerSeek.

Using phplinkdirectory, not too shabby for its price. But yes, I have to say if you have the cash, a custom script to suit your needs would be best.

Depends on the purpose or your site. The script should usually be tailored or specifically picked based on the sites intent. A lot of times I choose a shitty looking but robust script over a limited features pretty one.

I dont have any experiences with eDirectory. It looks good but too expensive for me and my small niche market.

    I use phpLD.
