I want to rank on #1 but wikipedia is on first place and i really dont know if i can beat them,. how to beat wikipeda? Is it possible? (Site is not uploaded yet, just a general question.)
I don't think its possible but you should keep working hard on your site because its going to take a lot to meet up with wikipedia standards.
I do not think the first rank will brings you the most traffic . If that is your goal , you can do your best to get it . But if you just need the traffic , I think the rank 2 , 3 , even 4 is enough ,too .
I have tried to get mentioned on Wiki but it is impossible as there are so many people monitoring it and removing listings. Only really large established brands get listed!
See, wikipedia has earned the status of 'Authority Site'... It is not impossible to beat wikipedia, but it requires huge effort. It does not promote anything, it does not contain spammy content, neither it earns any money from the content published (in terms of ads or affiliates) So, these are the few things that you need to start with to become an authority site. And, one more thing... Its not easy to earn this status. It takes years to become an authority website of the niche.
What's the string you're trying to rank for? Or is it a single word? I don't think you'll beat wikipedia for a single word query.
Beating wikipedia is very hard but not impossible, wikipedia have pretty high authority thats why wikipedia get more preferred by search engines plus the type of content on wikiedia like a one link resource. Therefore beating wikipedia could be possible if you work really hard on your content and site authority.
It's certainly not impossible, it is possible as long as it adds value to the page. I have some links on wikipedia, but I can imagine that it's tough to get an ecommerce website accepted. Because those kind of sites don't have a lot of ''informative'' value for the visitor.
If only it was that simple. IMO its become a more difficult task to outrank Wikipedia due to the recent Panda updates that gives more weight to "trusted" sites.
I strongly agree. How about considering CTR (Click-Through Rate) as a metric for any site's success. Being number 1 doesn't always mean that searchers are going to click on you. Try using a sensible snippet (meta description) with the keywords in it.
Would make sense since Wikipedia isn't a spam site, has a ton of really good information and millions of sites think the information is good enough to link to it without them asking for or buying links. And as a bonus, they don't run ads (that I've seen anyway). Search results should be about relevancy... And typically Wikipedia is full of great information and isn't some retarded made for AdSense site.
Just make your site better in every way to that Wiki page (more useful content, more powerful backlinks etc etc.). Anything is possible The only issue is that amount of time and money you spend getting above them might outweigh the return you get for being there!
Try to get a more-related content on your page and get authority backlinks. Not a fast method but it will work. However, you don't have to beat wikipedia to get traffic and sales.
I disagree, Wiki is considered an authority resource, and thus many webmasters will automatically link to the site. Linking to Wikipedia is lazy, and if webmasters thought about it a bit more, they likely could have linked to a better resource on the same subject. Wikipedia doesn't rank because it has really good information, it ranks because it has an enormous number of links.
Good sir, very well said. I strongly agree with you. I think it would also be great to know about how Wikipedia rose up to the top. I mean, everyone could learn from it.
I think you should not west your tile for getting first position removing wiki. You will get good traffic if your site stay just after wiki. Work for your another project. This will worth your time and work.
