How sweepstake/surveys sites make their money

    im trying to understand something.
I run a successful gpt website, and i feel im missing something.
I feel im working hard, and get the least %% in this whole chain.

i send leads to surveys sites, sweepstake sites, or any other form of sites that collect your information, while saying you can get a ipod as a price bla bla.

then, they not only collect your information, they are also signing you up for other offers on the way (coreg)

the way i understand is this:
let take a site like surveys.co.uk . they are not really a survey site, they are just a portal to collect your information to sell it.
THEY BUY LEADS from networks (non incent mainly) and media buying.
Lets say they pay 5$ for a person filling out the whole survey path .
then when he fill it, they make him signup for other stuff on the way (coreg), and sell this to another network immediately.
By doing the coreg, they make sure they are at least break even, or maybe profit (5$ and more commission from the other network).

Then lets say they did this over 10,000 quality leads.
as long as they break even or more, what they get is:
a list of 10,000 real people who they can then email stuff and make money of that list.
So really they are getting this list for free, right ?
Not only this, since they answer questions in the survey, they can sort the people by groups, so they know what offer to send them.

Do i get it right ?
Dose this how sites like surveys.co.uk make tons of money ?
(Or any other portal that collect data)

If so, i would surly would be interested to get into this business, and make these portals and leverage of the 'free' lists i get.

Like any business im sure its not as easy as it sound like.
So im posting this to get advice.
First of all, dose what i describe here, is true ?
2nd, how can i make this work for me ?

If you can't beat them, join them.

What stops you from making a list of your own from the traffic you get?

Also the gpt game is a bit flawed from the start. The traffic you obtain has a relatively low value because at the final link in the chain (when the users must purchase something), the conversion rate is abysmal.

Like i said in my post, im talking about NON-INCENT traffic. i know incent dose not worth much.

"What stops you from making a list of your own from the traffic you get? "
Well because i dont have any traffic anywhere beside my gpt site which is the only site ive got.

And now im just talking about trying something new and i want to know if it would work.

Any survey site that collects data can make money as you notice from trying to suggest other offers for their members to join
