As I am sure many of you know I own http://www.cometquery.com, now the question I ask is can I record what users search for, nothing about them is stored along with this and no way to find out what else the user searchs for {cough aol}, would you find this unmoral and more importantly would this be legal?

I would think you can do anything you want with the data that your site acquires.

I believe some countries may require you to have a privacy policy stating you record search terms.

Its not illegal or immoral to store data like this, you dont even necessarily need a privacy policy but it may be worth creating one so your visitors can find out exactly what information you store about them. You'd probably want to include all the standard information that your server logs will store aswell (IP, OS, Screen Res, etc)

It's not illegal or immoral in most circumstances. If you sold the information to a questionable company then it might be crossing the line but other than that...

It's all how you use the information and your intent that is the deciding factor.

Not true. Google scans copywritten books without permission and doesn't get in trouble for it, you or I couldn't do the same :)

Just because a lot of people do something doesn't necessarily make it legal OR moral. In any case, I'd probably create a privacy policy if I were you, just to cover your bases.

Just write it to your privacy policy and you should be fine.

Yea, I don't think collecting data on traffic behavior is wrong. No worries :)
