I like Zencart and Oscommerce because both are open source and there are many contributions that you can use to customize your shop.

Rather than making own site using script, you can hire a online store. SaaS technology will help you to get your own store, Have a look at ZSCART - which will let you have a own store.

Personally, I would go with PrestaShop. If you have the knowledge, there is an unbelievable amount of room for customization, and if you don't, you can still get a basic store up and running in about 15 minutes (or about an hour if you REALLY don't know what you're doing ;))

    Cheers,
    Matthew

I would strongly suggest utilizing Magento, it has a large developer community and is regularly updated. There is a large market place for professionally created add-ons and is built on a PHP and MySQLi.

Personally since making the switch to the Magento framework I would never entertain building a website on anything derived from the old exchange project (aka oscommerce/zencart).

Drupal+Ubercart is a great ecommerce solution. Simple to implement and there are lots of free themes available. Its especially good for simple products that dont require a lot of customization.

If you want to go with a hosted solution, try shopify.

I haven't personally built a site using Ubercart, but from a customer's perspective, I've purchased several times from an Ubercart site (one that I've seen on several e-commerce design lists actually) that has a very good product, and I'm always disappointed with the layout and usability of their site. The only reason I come back is because its a unique product I can't get it anywhere else, but the website alone very nearly turns me off of their product.

If you want something easily to customize, I would go with Prestashop or Opencart.

But Wordpress with an e-commerce plugin is a good solution too.

All of them are OpenSource, and could fit to your requirements.

Pick a cart with a good track record that is fairly lightweight and nimble - at this point you probably don't want to get burdened down by hundreds of features you don't need
