    Hello everyone,
I have searched on this topic, but I could not find where to buy pictures of a certain person.

Im doing a new website where I need some pictures on this guy to post on my website. Hes a famous athlete.

Anyone know where to find pictures of famous athletes that you can use on your page?

    Thanks!

You can, but using images that someone else is illegally using is also copyright infringement.

I was under the impression that as long as you credit the source and give a link back and don't take images from only one place you are within fair use guidelines. Of course, if asked, you should remove them.

If you want to lease rights pics of celebs though, try gettyimages.

You can see what I do here. Pittwatch.com and CelebrityPicturesandNews.com

On both sites I link back with every picture I take. You can add the info somewhere in the article, even at the bottom "Image from blahblah". If you don't do it with every picture, you stand a larger chance of them fighting you.

I don't think he'd steal from Getty anyway. They usually put a God-awful watermark right over the faces of a pic so you kinda HAVE to lease it, as I suggested.

It's annoying, but it works for protecting their images. :)

They're usually quite expensive ($500-$1k). They are designed to gouge places like USA Today and magazines. We can't afford the gouging.

Most bloggers feel free to borrow images w/linkback and clear attribution, but hotlinking is, of course, out of the question.

In my experience, I had one blogger ask (well, scream at me) to remove a picture. I wrote down his evil name and never visited his site again. The rest of the celeb bloggers I deal with are happy for the link back. Remember, they do the same thing when they see a good pic.

Perez Hilton is in trouble right now for doing this, but it's because 1-he was asked to remove them by X17 and said he would, then didn't. And, because he often beats them to posting their own pics (via a snitch in their own offices). That would suck to pay a papparrazzi $5K for a pic to end up seeing it on Perez's site first, w/no attribution (as if it's his).

He's in deep doo doo right now on this one.

You might try checking with the celebrity's official site (if they have one). Some times they will have photos on their site. You might be able to get permission to use them if your site is going to benefit their publicity.

If you are looking for photos at movie premiers and stuff like that, it might be just as cheap to hire a photographer to take the photos for you.

For safer alternative, why don't you edit the images first with image editor so it won't exactly looks like the original image?

IMO, it's just more straightforward to give credit and linkback when you use a pic, and remove it if asked.

yeah thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will try to just put on a few pictures and at the end of the page have a link to the pages where I took them from.

Taking images is a copyright infringement regardless if you put up a link to the source or not.
If you put up a link to the source you even make it easier for them to track your infringement down ;)

You always need to ask the author of the image for permission to use it on your site.
If you don't good luck for not being sued ;)

Be forewarned that you are breaking the law. DaStarBuG is truly right....take it from me. My mother published this book.
